Allotments 4 All

Collected two wheelie bins from our local council depot, only damage was under the lip where the new lorries can't pick them up as they are cracked.  Hubby fitted waterbutt taps so all veg peelings will go in, drain the liquid feed for the garden and plot. Once full I'll start filling the other one. Meanwhile the first one should start drying off with a little help from the sun  :) and I'll incorporate the contents with my general compost bin contents and so should end up with a good mix.........well that's the plan.

I have 2 behind my shed told the council mine was broken  and the other I had when my son moved house done the same as you with the one filled it with all the waste from the kitchen and garden and with the other I got a sack from the veg shop  (onion sack) filled with manure put a bar through the top  so it  dangles in the water and i feed all my beans with this as a feed as as the flowers appear and then once a week when the beans are being picked

We "got" one and its great for wheeling about the plot at the end of the growing season throwing all the ends of things into,saves carting a wheel barrow or similar as the bin holds so much.Loving the tap idea,may need to copy that one,if we can get another! ;)

that's good otherwise they just throw them away. Must make some enquiries too.

Hope this is not a stupid question, how does one get right to the bottom to secure the inside part of the tap bit? I don't think my hands are long enough to get right to the bottom of the bin.

Drill a hole
Put a bit of sealant round the hole
Screw the tap on
Leave to dry

You get someone to help. Drill hole - crawl in bin and secure tap between you. My young daughter helped with mine. Simple really.

shhhh, our green bin is at the plot, filled with water, we don't have any green stuff to throw away  ;D

What is the logic of filling a green waste bin, giving it the corpy just to buy the flaming stuff back again a few months down the line?

We do not have them in our area, perhaps I could make use of the tote bins they leave us. :D
Then again no as they have got holes in them.  :-X

One of my wormeries looks just like that. (You would need a shelf just above the tap so it doesn't get blocked.)

been wanting to do a worm thingy so  pinching these ideas ;) what size mesh would i need to for the bottom of the wheelie bin??

The worms are going to get through almost any size hole! The first time I did it, I used some old net curtains over about 3mm holes. Now I just put newspaper on the shelf. When the thing is working the worms are further up the pile anyway, and you are not doing anything to make the "soil" fall through the holes. The only problem with something this size is emptying it! It can get quite heavy.

I took the wheels off my old bin then cut off the bottom of the bin. Put the bin upside down on the soil and fitted a lid. I put all kitchen waste, leaves and Grass clippings in it and I just emptied it to give me beautiful black gold

Yep considering this myself as a water but but as the greenhouse is on hold i have had to shelve the plan for a while :)
