i can find lists on line but none of them even mention Norwich so i know they are incomplete

Yes in Roman Times and throughout the middle Ages London was walled. Hence the "Gate" names like Newgate. Have to be careful though as this far North "Gate" often means street... like Iron Gate and Saddlergate in Derby. I blame the Vikings...  ;D

Oh yes and Aldgate (old)... Moorgate....

Another good site tonybloke.  Clicking the Lincoln link fully explains my location under my avatar and as I am very fond of saying, we are about the only major settlement in England that has a corruption (rather than a replacement) of our Roman name which in itself, is a corruption of the Celtic name.

The Museum of London is a fantastic museum if you ever get a chance. I went there once with my family for a few hours - starting at prehistoric London, we only got as far as Roman times on our trip, there's so much to see. The Roman stuff is really excellent.

funny, I always thought Wigan must've been as we have a wallgate, standishgate, hallgate, and a few others, all around the town centre  ???

still have the walls going round Berwick on tweed.   Makes a lovely walk if you are ever up this far.

Yes London is a walled city - its now known as the M25  ;D

Beverley was walled, the buses that ran through the gates have special rounded tops, still do. Sorry I don't know about London. XX Jeannine
