Big Al

Hi everyone

I have been loging in as a guest now for a couple of months and decided it was time to start making some sort of contribution as you seem like such a friendly lot. I have been impressed by the way you all share your extensive knowledge and experience so readily so stand by for some really stupid questions in the near future.
I took over a 500sq.m. plot last October it was full of couch grass and bramble roots but my brother and I have managed to dig and weed about a third of it. We are hoping to have half of it ready for the planting season.
The plot is in Hull (which is a little fishing village in the Humber Estuary).
As soon as I have found out how to do it I will post some pictures of the plot as it was and how it is now.
The allotment is my retirement present to myself as I finish work at the end of March.

Hello Big Al & welcome to A4A.  You are right this is a friendly place with loads of good advice.  Looking forward to the pics.  We like pics.  :)

Lovely to see you de-cloaking from lurker status. Welcome!

Take lots of photos now; you can worry about posting them any time. We'll all want to see the "before" as well as the "during" (there's never an "after" when it comes to allotments, they're like the Forth Bridge!)

MrsKP

welcome in Big Al.

I'm still waiting for my plot, and I might be your age by the time I get one, but if a youngster like you can do it, I'll hang in there on the waiting list for a while longer yet.

Oh and lest he forgets, Tim is an expert, he just forgets the fact occasionally !

Do take photos from the start you will be surprised how a lottie can change in one season. I hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine.

I'm sure the plot will keep you busy in your retirement and i know what you mean about weeds.

Hi Big Al,

I'm a newbie too. I don't have an allotment, but hoping to be able to grow things in pots this year.

Everyone of the site is so helpful so if you have any questions just ask away.

Jo.

As others have said, take plenty of piccies and ask plenty of questions - don't forget that you're helping the other newbies out too  ;)

Good luck for your growing season, don't forget to enjoy it along the way too!  ;) ;D

Hi all

Thanks for such a wonderful welcome I wish Ihad joined weeks ago.
I am looking forward to many "conversations" in the future and picking your brains.
Seems like Big Al is not such a unique name as I thought it would be.

Hi, Al- and welcome! I wonder how many of the Big Al's are namedafter the character in "The Beiderbecke affair"?

Hi Al,
I remember Hull in the 60's (worked for Ross on the 'Cat' class trawlers)
There was a bar called 'Cotties? the barman was an up- hill gardener with two rows of solid gold teeth.
Any road up - welcome to our weird world!
