is this the sign of aa hard winter to come, old myth ?   :)

I hope not. We need some cold weather to kills all the bugs and viruses though.

Like the pics.  Here is my contribution, no idea what it is.  but liked the berries. 

i saw some of the purple ones in B&Q last visit.  i wondered if they were real (a la wahaj and his painted heathers) and lo and behold, it squished !

can't remember what it was called though.

Odd colured berries but the plant is Callicarpa bodinieri!

What in Heaven's name was Eric being 'ignored' for - some joke? Just done the 'kiss-of-life'.

stunning berries all of them!

i've always wanted those purple berries. i saw them once and instantly fell in love with them......they are so beautiful. sadly i've never been able to find them at any garden centre i've been to since.

Ignore Eric???   never..... you can't ignore him.  He is one of the most knowledgeable of knowledgeable folk on A4A.  What he doesn't know about flowers and plants etc. is not worth knowing.   Isn't that correct Eric???   ;) ;) ;)

Yes, I know GW, I looked at that plant, took a pic of it and considered buying it, but as I often do - changed my mind.  Well, truth be told, OH said "Where is that going"????  MEN... ;D ;D ;D ;D

So it is, but I did not see it until after I had identified the picture!. We have one in the garden, but it never produces the spectacular results like ones you see in the G/c.s.
More true to say what I DO know about plants is not worth knowing though!
And these are haws, but at least 4 times as big as normal ones. There is no name on this tree so I will have to go digging to find a big fruited variety. Will post comparison pics tomorrow, maybe.

I grew my calicarpa from seed last year and now have 2 very nice small shrubs.  Hopefully they will fruit for me next year as I think they are GORGEOUS!  Love the sorbus also, that lovely baby pink.  yummy!

I was out today so i finally remembered to take a plastic bag with me. Collected a few berries when i saw them. I didn't have time to go round labelling anything...mainly because i don't know what most of it's called lol.

But i know roughly what they all looked like. There's a lot or red berries in there but from a lot of different plants.



just gonna throw them into a big pot of sandy and leave it in the shed near the window.

Most of the red ones are haws, but the big white ones are almost certainly from Snowberry aka Symphoricarpus which, if it is, is a terrible thug whch spreads like mad from suckers.

If you're planting berries, leave the pot out in the cold; a lot of them need to stratify. That is, they won't germinate till they've been through a period of several weeks of cold weather.

thanks :) i know atleast one of them is skimmia and the yellow and orange onces are firethorn.

I have this bush in my garden but i don't know it's exact name. It's a stunning compact bush that had thorns on it. The new leaves are little oval things that appear in spring and are ofen pink in colour. All the leaves then start to turn in autumn but they're all are different stages so it looks like a watercolour painting. and it has tinny little red oval berries on it aswell...probably about a cm long.
