Hello All
So excited. I have just been offered  a 5 rod plot on a local allotment site. I am going to take a look at it on Sunday, can't wait. It is apparently a little neglected but not too bad.  Just hope that it won't take too much to get it into shape. I am so keen to get on and take my little grandson with me to introduce him to the joys of growing. Wish me luck for Sunday! Thanks :D

brilliant news, our grandson loves to dig up fresh carrots, eat all the strawberries and fresh peas ,plus he eats the cucumbers fresh from the vine.. mind you, he is 10  ;D

Just returned from viewing the plot with my friend Mary. She has offered to help out with the digging. We both need to shift a few pounds and hope the exercise will help :-\. The plot is a bit overgrown but most of it has been covered in carpet, which is frozen at the moment. There is a small bed part dug that will hopefully do for this years potatoes. Need to get a small shed, about 6x4 to keep the tools in. Any suggestions of the cheapest place to go? I think I shall have an allotment party when the weather improves and call in a few owed favours in exchange for being fed and some of the spoils of our labour. Think I shall soon find out who are true friends ;).
I took a couple of pictures so now how to work out how to download onto the site.

to upload photos i find imageshack the easiest, just get the onto the comp and load them on to imageshack, click share and copy the forum 1 code and paste it into your post on here.  hope that makes sense

Welcome to the wonderful world of allotments. I took over mine in July and have been hooked ever since, I spend literally every hour of the day waiting for the spring and milder weather :)

My advice to you and by no means am I an expert is to dig over the allotment and get rid of as much of the weed as possible. Do not rotivate the plot as you will make more problems for yourself because the weeds will be spread everywhere.

Plant potatoes to clear the ground, I'm told it is a good way of clearing the soil of nasties. Anyone care to confirm this?

My other piece of advice is set yourself small goals. Do not aim to clear the plot in a small amount of time, set yourself a piece of land to clear and stick to it. Go home feeling pleased you have met your goal rather than disheartened that you haven't cleared the whole plot. Lots of people start with the best intentions and then jack it all in after a month because its A) To much work or B) they get disheartened.

Welcome Jeanbean don't leave the carpets down too long, there a fecker to get up and the soil could do with a bit of frost on it. M.compo the gound does get broken up but only from your own graft.  ;D ;D ;D

Yey, congrats! We took our very neglected plot on at the end of August so are at the clearing stage too. We've managed to get a few bits & pieces in though & are manically trying to get things under control on the rest of the plot before the growing season kicks in.

Definitely take *lots* of pics too - I don't ever think I've achieved anything at the end of a session til I look back at the photos and looking back at the way things were last August is even more rewarding!

B&Q have 6x4 sheds for £105 at the moment - I am also looking and that's the cheapest I have seen so far. Try Ebay for second hand bargains though

I can't wait until I post the same news. I've had my name down for a lottie for 18 months now but still can't say I'm near the top of the list.
