Any rememdies out there?  I have taken Ibroprufen even though they make me breathless, and I have held a hot pad on my neck/shoulder, but boy does it hurt!  I did it in such a strenuous way....unloading the blinking dishwasher!  Reached up at an angle to put a glass in the cupboard and suddenly had a burning hot zap of pain from my neck up into my head.  Now I can't turn my head to the right......husbands recommendation....don't turn head to the right then.....  Did manage to continue with decorating, if a little slower than usual, but now at 11pm it is begining to ache again.  I am supposed to be working in someones garden tomorrow!  :-\

Not a remedy, but a suggestion, having suffered with similar problems over the years ....

Iboprufen will definitely assist, so don't resist taking them.

Before bedtime, and again when you get up, endeavour to do some exercises to stretch the muscles across your back and so relax your torso as much as possible. When you acquire an injury such as this, there is a tendency to tense up to prevent putting strain onto the affected parts, this in turn makes mobility more painful ...  Of course, if you are able to be massaged by your OH ...

At the minimum, you should sleep better ...  :)
The impossible is just a journey away ...

When this happens to me, I have a hot shower and make sure that I hold the sore bit under the water stream (turned up to the fastest I can cope with!) once I've done that, I rub lots of deep heat in before getting dressed. Works better if you can get someone else to rub in the cream! :)

Whatever pain relief you can tolerate every 4 hours tomorrow EJ.
Hope you're soon better.
Smile, it confuses people.

supersprout

sorry to hear it EJ
Nowadays as soon as anything like that happens I go straight to a chiropractor - we have some good ones here, all in the same street, and they magically click things back into the right place :o
Hope you feel better soon :)

Put your chin on you chest - turn VERY slowly to left, as far as you can go - & then to the right.
Raise chin a fraction, repeat.
Repeat, till head is upright.

SLOWLY!!

I've got ankylosing spondylosis in my neck bones, sounds like a similar pain
painkillers do help, I rub in tiger balm, morning and night, or rather, ray does,it really helps, I rub it in my hands and knees as well, if they're bad, works well and smells like uncle joe's mintballs, lovely

also clears the sinuses  :D

I do sympathise Ej (((hugs))) having just torn a ligament in my shoulder (hence the argument at the docs the other day, hehe) I know exactly where you are coming from.

Doc has given me some strong painkillers and also advised the hot and cold treatment (hot flannel, cushion etc followed by ice pack) and plenty of rest.  So not much else than you are already doing it seems?  Maybe a tube of Deep Heat?  Went back to the docs this morning and have been told not to work all week - I didn't need to hear that bit twice!

So no gardening, housework, general slaving for you for a few days!  ;D ;)

I've got ankylosing spondylosis in my neck bones

I must ask - what is the above please, MS?

manicscousers

it's arthritis of the spine, have it in 2 places, causes little spiny bone growths that compress nerves, the little nasties, has put me out of work as I used to do bookkeeping, also stopped the cross stitch, so now I make cards  :D, bit at a time

mine was caused by an injury at 3 years old, just got worse cause I didn't know it was there

be careful of working too long on your computers, also have rsi from that !!
just generally falling to bits  ;D, stlii, got all my marbles  :P :P

Mrs Ava

Wow MS, that sounds very painful!

Glad to report, after a restless night, the pain has eased a little.  I went to work and did some light pruning and pottering - glad to say my boss today is a chum so she was very understanding.  I can turn my head slightly further to the right now but I find it incredibly painful if I am bent down and lean forward with my right arm to lift something.  Deep heat and ibroprufen seem to be doing the trick.

I am supposed to go to step class and aerobics tonight........I know I can hear you all saying it, but would it be wise?  I plan to tell my teacher and just take things very very easy - but am I like to do more harm than good??????  :-\

Barnowl

Might be worth trying Ibuprofen gel,  instead of the ibuprofen and Deep Heat. Works quite well for me when I've put my neck out (usually reaching for something off the back seat of the car).

A difficult call ...

I injured myself 4 weeks ago whilst ice skating, a tiny slip, I was already squatting down, and ended up sitting on the ice. Somehow I damaged my gluteal maximus (butt muscle) and got massive bruising, plus spasms, and was in agony for a few weeks afterwards ... The bruising is still visible along the back of my leg.

Did it stop me skating though - pigs will fly first !

In light of that, I would suggest you proceed cautiously, and expect to feel sore afterwards.
The impossible is just a journey away ...

the only thing I'm thinking about is, if your muscle is inflamed, doesn't deep heat heat it up, when I sprained my knee, it was ice and rest, just a thought  :D, glad you're feeling a bit better though, look after yourself

Now theres a song that brings back memories. Just what you need for your neck.

Now there’s a place in Wigan a place you all should know
A busy little factory where things are all the go
They don’t make Jakes or Eccles Cakes or things to stick on walls
But night and day they work away at Uncle Joe’s Mint Balls

Chorus (to be sung after each verse)

Uncle Joe’s Mint Balls keep you all aglow
Give ‘em to your grannie and watch the beggar go
Away with coughs and sniffles, take a few in hand
Suck ‘em and see, you’ll agree
They’re the best in all the land

Me dad has always wanted curly hair on his bald head
Suck an Uncle Joe’s Mint Ball that’s what the doctor said
So he got an Uncle Joe’s Mint Ball and sucked it all night long
When he got up next morning, he’d hairs all over his tongue

Me uncle Albert passed away from ale upon the brain
The doctors said that he were dead and would never walk again
So they gave the corpse an Uncle Joe’s and then stood back aghast
Cos the corpse jumped up and ran to the pub and spent the insurance brass

Me granny said me granddad ‘e were gettin’ old and slow
And fire in grandad’s boiler ‘ad gone out long ago
So ‘e got an Uncle Joe’s Mint Ball, sucked it all the night
But his hot breath singed her vest and set the bed alight

We ‘ad a pigeon it were bald and couldn’t fly too fast
Never won places in the races, always come in last
Though it were bald, no feathers at all it won a race one day
We give it an Uncle Joe’s Mint Ball and it ran al’t bloody way

I had a girl her name was May in passion she were lackin’
Fed ‘er with whisky to make ‘er frisky, still she wouldn’t get crackin’
So I gave her an Uncle Joe’s Mint Ball to get ‘er all aglow
Now she combs the streets of Wigan, looking for Uncle Joe!

We gave some to the coalman’s ‘orse as it stood in the road
It gave a cough then beggared off with it’s cart an’ load
It ran onto the racecourse going like a bird
Covered the track with nutty slack and came first, second and third

The RSPCA have bought six tons of Uncle Joe’s
To give to all the animules to keep ‘em all aglow
Our budgie now is six foot tall, the cat is eight foot three
And all the poor brass monkeys are as happy as can be

Look up Mike Harding on the web, get one of his CDs. He is a very funny man and a good folk singer.  I have done a few gigs as a supporting artist when I was a lot younger, with him topping the bill.

In a word Emma, YES.
I have a dreadfull neck problem been to physio and still it hurts like hell, so i warm my beanbag in the microwave and it certainly does help, i also get Ron to rub devils claw into it and it feels better for a couple of hours,  They used to call D C firey jack when i was a lass. i love the smell of it do give it a try Emma.
I wish you well take care love Mary.

Mrs Ava

Oh Ace, I could frequently do with some of those mint balls!!  :o

Thanks Rosebud - I have been using the childrens heat pads and they certainly seem to loosen the tightness.

I did go to step, it is only a small class and I know the teacher very well and I explained.  I took things gently and altho it twanged a couple of times, I felt better for having done some exercise, and my neck felt more limbered.  Don't know what sort of pain I will be in when I wake up though!

Thanks for your kind words folks - I am sure it is you cyber wishes that are helping ease the aches!
