Allotments 4 All

I'd like to subscribe to a gardening magazine like grow your own, I'm only interested in edible produce, does anyone have any recommendations or comments on publications?

Kitchen Garden magazine has far (IMHO) better advice each month than GYO, which tends to gear towards the yuppies more, design rather than practicality...

You may find your local library has some in stock (depending on where you live!)

Organic gardener is quite good too, but obtaining it in shops to "try it" is harder

i gave up on them once i discovered A4A!  ;D

thanks will investigate kitchen garden, I love to read a seed catalogue in bed in winter but a mag would be nice in spring/summer!  ;D

What about Garden Organic magazine (was HDRA)? In a good cause, generally good articles and useful tips too.

I'd also put in a word for Gardening Which? - expensive and only about 50% fruit and veg at best but when it does a subject it is pretty comprehensive - making it more useful as a reference.

I contrast this with the (admittedly small number of) issues of other mags I've seen - several of them had more than one article about the same subject (eg. grapes) in the same issue! Though they didn't disagree they did overlap.

I can only comment on Grow Your Own magazine as it is the only one I have read.  Subscribed to it this past year and seems fine to me.  I would recommend it.

I like grow your own and if you subscribe you can get a good deal. I think I paid about £21 for a years subscription (monthy mag). You do get a few free seeds as well.

I've had subscriptions to both GYO and Kitchen Garden (given to me as presents in the past). I don't think there's much to choose between them. I flick through them and read the odd article but frankly for good gardening information I'd rather consult a good reference book. I certainly wouldn't pay for a subscription to either. The only good thing is they remind you what jobs need doing next month but, if you've been growing stuff for a bit, you probably know that anyway.

I've brought both (obsessed, obsessed!) and prefer Kitchen Gardener. I particularly like a small but very useful section on seasonal recipes which have normally been great when I have gluts. I do know I can look them up on this or other sites but I really enjoy reading my mag(s)

I had GYO subscription for a while but did not renew it as it seemed to be the same stuff regurgitated every two or three months. Plus they tend to 'dumb down' growing veg which I found to be annoying quite often. Like Kitchen Garden which I think is a far better option.

I get Kitchen Garden magazine. I was debating about renewing my subscription, but the rotation of some of the writers and new features means I probably will now. I sometimes get Grow Your Own and Grow It depending on what features they have/ if I'm travelling. Before subscribing I just browsed and brought in the shop - I usually ended up with Kitchen Garden so it made sense to save money with a subsciption.

Unless you love your mags i wouldn't subscribe-KG probably the best for what you want. I buy it maybe twice a year. I love GW too. My OH calls it something rude which I don't want to put so I'll couch it "Gardeners 'naughty mag beginning with P'  ;D
