Cabbage

Hi, I got an allotment last year and spent my time cleaning the place up ready for this year, can someone please explain to me, when to plant cabbages, the packets says winter cabbage does that mean (plant in winter) Spring Cabbage(plant in spring) so on, any variety recommendations would be helpful Many thanks Happy New year to everyone.

You are not alone - that confused me to death in the first year and I ended up eating most of my 'spring' brassicas in the autumn.

The details of when to sow depend very much on where you are in the UK and a little bit on the variety, so where are you?

Spring cabbage means it's cropping then, so

Spring cabbage is sown late summer/early Autumn
Autumn ones sown in spring (early summer in some parts)
Winter ones are generally sown in the summer

Specifics, like I said, dependent on where you are....

I prepared my sowing/planting list today and laid out seed packets in sowing order.

Other than Onions I won't be sowing much for a few weeks yet.

Over the next 8 weeks or so I tend to get the chrysants cuttings out of the way so that I can concentrate on 'seed sowing'!

Hi thanks for the reply Im based in the West midlands

I'm in the South-East myself so you probably need to adjust some of it, but if you just want a simple answer about sowing dates - to cut a long story short:

Autumn cabbages would generally be sown around March/April/May. depends on variety

Winter cabbages - for me a June sowing is good (others may disagree and do it earlier).

For spring cabbages the timing is more tricky.  You need local advice so ask around your allotments.  You don't want them to develop heads before the hard frosts or they can die - just a little bit of growth is needed before winter sets in.  This year I sowed on the last day of August and planted out early October.

Welcome to a4a.  Hope you do well with the cabbages and I will be interested to know the results.  I was just as confused until I read Tee Gees almanac which is very good for other information.  I am  not too far from you so the weather should be the same.
