Allotments 4 All

That is the question. On my bag of Arthur Bowers it says to cover seeds with glass and then black plastic after sowing in trays to aid germination, but on my new propogating tray wrappers it says to cover with tops provided and put in a light place. ???
Does anyone think one method is better than the other? Does it make that much difference?

Emaggie think you will find it depends on the seed.

Some likes it light, and some likes it dark! ;D

I am sure someone will be along with a more technical explaination! ::)

Interesting, now you mention it.

You don't cover outdoors, do you? One reason to cover indoors is to conserve moisture. But most seeds - other than Carrots - prefer the dark, so they say.

Don't lettuce, celery and celeriac like light for germination too?

Sorry - Lettuce, not Carrots. The others may well be similar. Don't know. Don't really bother!

Celery is surface sown so needs light to germinate.

our parsnips on damp kitchen paper have just gone in to the dark, I read somewhere about it..everything else is just covered with a plastic bag or lid  ;D
