I am ashamed to say that I have not visited Cornwall since 1981  :-[

But we are thinking of putting that right this year and having a weeks Summer holiday there.

We plan to stay in maybe three or four places and have a good look around.

I know that Cornwall often gets mentioned here and would like to pick at your brains and allow you to throw lots of suggestions to me of places that I should visit.

I apprecaite all of the help and suggestions that you can offer.

We are also considering a visit to Jamie Olivers place fifteen at Cornwall.
Does anyone know of a good hotel near there that we can stay overnight in too?

Many thanks in advance xxxx

Bude has always been my love.

honeybee

Oh Tim and i thought it was me  ;)  :-*

manicscousers

wow, you've been away too long, we go every year and have done since we got married, 35 years this year.
.st ives gets my vote, we're going there in august, bude is quite a not touristy place, st austell, beautiful coastline, mind you, you're hard pressed to find anything else..

don't know where jamie's place is, could be watergate bay, again, beautiful place..kynance cove, wild , bedruthan steps, amazing, perranporth, bit more touristy, newquay, definitely touristy, mevagissey, lovely

no doubt there'll be other lovely places people will say and some lucky b***ers live there

have a wonderful time  ;D

honeybee

Oh thankyou,thankyou. A brilliant start,please keep them coming  :-*

Yes Jamies place is Watergate Bay, there is one hotel within yards(the watergate bay hotel) but i wanted to know of any other nearby options as i do like to have a choice  :)

We are going to stay in Cornwall in May specifically to visit the Eden Project and the Lost Gardens of Helligon. I've never been before so I am reading this topic with interest. I am very sure we wont be dissapointed. ;)
Smile, it confuses people.

You lucky thing, we went to cornwall for several years running when the step children were younger and loved it.

One of our favourite places was Looe, although a small place in itself, it's near to lots of other places so makes for a good base camp.  We also found one of our most favouritest restaurants there, it was a slow food restaurant, near the beach, owned and run by a zimbabwean couple.  Superb food and lovely relaxed atmosphere, i'd very highly recommend it if only i could remember the name.  I'm sure it began with an m...

(just googled it, and it was called mawgans) x
Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened

Definitely visit the Eden Project, and we loved Sennen Cove/Whitesand Bay. We stayed at Perranporth which was nice. The Camel Trail is fun to cycle along and Padstow is a great little town to visit, a bit busy but fun to look around. :)

Hot House

yes eden project is very nice but beware the car parks are a feeding ground for muppets, we got back to our VW Camper to find most iof the doors open and stuff missing. only take what u can carry with u and show ur boot is empty if u can.

Cornwall is a most lovely place

There`s loads of lovely places to visit in Cornwall!  When we visit we always stay here, it`s lovely  :)  www.self-catering-ruthern.co.uk

Larkspur

For a very different landscape do visit the very far west. The coast (Cape Cornwall and around) is beautifull but it is the flat, windswept inland area that is unlikeanywhere else in England. Oh and yes the Lost Gardens are superb but there are a lot of good gardens in Cornwall. :)

Shame ain't it when you can't afford a proper holiday

No only joking ;D I would go there just to see the lost gardens. When you are there look in the local papers to see if they have an open gardens scheme in any of the villages. You will meet a load of dedicated gardeners to swap ideas with.

If you really want to eat and the local food, Rick Steins place looks good.

Just to highjack your thread. If any of you are coming to the Isle of Wight for a proper holiday come over on the May bank holiday, there is a good garden show going on.

Bedruthan Steps is a wonderful beach, wild and rocky, but not good for swimmimg. Lots of steps up and down to it. Trebarwith Strand gets our vote as the best place in Cornwall, g ood beach, caves and rock-pools, not to busy, good pub.
We went to look at 15, but could not afford to eat there, £50 for lunch!!!. There is a good surfers bar and restaurant behind the beach at Watergate.
Each to their own, but we hated Padstow and St Ives, soooo many people. I can remember when Iused to Nanny and we went to Cornwall in the 1970's, it was much quieter. Very good campsite at Morgan Porth, called Magic Cove, and it was magic ;) ;)

rick steins prices are quite expensive, and if we all come to the IOW, are we all stopping with you, Ace, you shouldn't've asked !!

hi honeybee

we go to cornwall annually and stay at a place called Mother Iveys Bay....just west of Padstow....we usually go in a gang of 21 - 10 adults and 11 children, in a mixture of caravans and statics...luvvvvery secluded place with private beach and great walks....and peace and quiet, red wine, guiness, bar b's etc etc etc.

Cornwall so beautiful, we love going there camping with kids and escaping for weekends. Definately do Eden, it's fantastic. Also Mevagissey and Bodmin -Daphne Du Maurier trail. I don't think there is anywhere in Cornwall I dislike, although I outgrew Newquay quite a while ago, I loved it in my yoof! Try www.cornwalltouristboard.co.uk for more inspiration.
Don't throw paper away. There is no away.

Hi I'd recommend Heligan and Eden - both stunning in their own way, depending on when you come they will be busy to very busy.

There are many national trust and private gardens, Trebah, on the Helford River and Trevarno, close to Helston (both private) are free to RHS members.

Most of the gardens in Penwith (far west Cornwall) are known for their Spring plants - the camelias and magnolias have been out for ages now, so altho visiting in summer is lovely, you see them at their best now - May.  In fact some gardens close to Penzance have opened early because the plants are that much earlier to flower this year.

I hope you have a good visit

Alison (I live near to Penzance and work in Falmouth).

If you're in west Cornwall, try to get to the Minack Theatre. If you haven't seen it, it was handbuildt (mostly by one woman) into the cliffside just by Porthcurno Bay, near Penzance. It has possibly the most dramatic backdrop in the world: the Cornish sea and sky. You can go as a day-visitor and tour the theatre, or book tickets for a variety of summer performances.
