Yes we do tim, they are located in fields around Doddington, March, with their tops flopped over. In a couple of weeks I will be trundling behind onion lorries hoping for a bump in the road :)

Saw those, Emma, & said 'no way'. 'Specially in mid-summer!!

But they would have gone into a 'green veg soup'.

bah!!!!grr!!!!!
pester your greengrocer!
he needs a good wallop in the wallet for importing argentinian anything...
and flying sprouts!we still have a variety of locally grown in season veg in lincolnshire--now either people arent trying very hard to grow their commercial crops, prefering to import at vast expense(both money and people)or there is a demand for out of season food...
if we didnt buy it they wouldnt sell it...

god i'm grumpy tonight..please excuse the krabby kitty...but really...did mummy jane NEED sprouts?
tim-did you grow over winter  hunions?we're still munching outrs...

That's a long way to go just to get sprouts EJ ;D

Mrs Ava

heheheh grumpy kitty!  ;D  Problem with mother dearest is she lives on the outskirts of London, doesn't drive any great distances, and her nearest shop is Sainsburys.  Even her local greengrocers has gone.  She didn't need sprouts - but knows I like them so bought them for me when we went to lunch.

;DRoy!

I lurrrrrrve sprouts but I can wait till winter.  Unlike last year, mine are going great guns this year - thanks to Dominique after the slugs got my first lot.

I had a pop at my partner when she bought French beans grown in Kenya during the winter.  Got them on tap now with less than one food mile for two portions.  Like the current push against food miles but not so keen on the mealy mouthed rep from Tesco on the news tonight.

What did the rep say? Managed to have a night without TV last night so missed it.

Quite agree Tim. Tesco's last weekend had organic spring onions from Mexico! Bought the non-organic ones from the UK, as I decided the food miles on the Mexican onions were just ridiculous! And hopefully next year I'll be organised enough to grow my own...

Cheers,
Rob ;)

About how they do stock home produced stuff (a massive 20%) but that consumers demand stuff out of season.  Never did before - it was only the advent of the big supermarkets importing the stuff that created the demand.  They did it, they can undo it - but they won't while they and their shareholders (not the suppliers) make big fat profits.

I can guarantee you that it's not in all stores (my local is an example) and that their version of "home produced" is good produced within the British Isles (a start) and includes such small enterprises as Carrs, Duchy of Cornwall, Innocent and Colemans.

Ever heard of Facing Heaven, The Secret Recipe Company, Childwickbury Goat's Cheese?  No? Probably because they're too small an outfit to produce produce by the pallette-load. Tesco's will probably screw down their prices phenomenally if they ever did decide to stock them. Mind you - if they do stock them, we will have to stop as they will undercut us... Bloomin' supermarkets  >:( ;D
