July showers

There's still been no significant rain at all here, and the plot still looks as dry as ever. The little bits we have been having have obviously had an impact though. The beetroot, which was wilting not long ago, is now growing merrily. The worry, of course, is that a very short hot spell would put everything right back where it was. How are other people getting on?

Frustrated at the constant forecast of heavy showers by afternoon which never materialise - salad crops all bolting or going bitter.  Rasps are in the rhubarb specially constructed manure and bog corner and producing wonderfully, but strawberries tailed off.

On a positive note, my recently constructed garden on light sandy soil is looking good - it's worth putting in the soil preparation time and then adopting the soak it heavily and then leave it alone regime - All this years planting looking good having not been watered since last Wednesday.

Found & accidentally disturbed a nest yesterday while clipping back neighbours mildewed rambling rose - fingers crossed the bird will settle back - retreated immediately so I didn't see what the bird is or if it was sitting on eggs.  Double finger crossed.
is it in the sale?

At long last we had a few hours of decent rain fall last night, heavy enough to fill the near empty water buts and get through the heavy foliage of tree to the ground under neath.

On Sunday am we had a couple of hours of very very fine drizzle that just dampened the dust but last night was just what was needed in my bit of Sussex.

As the forecast is set fair for the rest of the week I will be spraying the spuds this evening against blight and picking a few toms, I expect some will have split because of the rain.

We had a bit more than the usual very light shower last night; the lane was damp in shady places, and the soil looked a little damp here and there, under the hedge and where it's been well mulched. It's still a worry though as my soil soon dries out, superficially at any rate.

Had a prolonged bout of goodish rain last night and nice and sunny today so expcting to attacked by triffids when I go up later. ;D

Hooray yipee zippidy doo dah!  It started raining at around 5pm last night, rained steadily for an hour or so, then remained damp, and when I went to bed at around 11.30, it was peeing down again, and at one point, the noise woke me!  The water butts are full again, my grass is looking greener already and everything looks so fresh and perky.  So glad I got to the allotment yesterday and sowed seeds and weeded.  Fingers crossed now everything will come on no end, probably the bindweed and marestail!  ;D

Still next to no rain here :(

Grass in the paddocks is all parched and burnt so we're having to buy hay in already!!!

Veg doing ok but we haven't got a hosepipe ban so are fortunate to be able to water once a week (apart from the stuff growing in the polytunnel which gets watered more often)

We do keep having an odd mini shower but nothing else and most of it is evaporating.....Never ever did I think that I'd complain about not having any rain in the North East lol

Jerry lucky you, we got the rain, but not enough to fill the butts, and the ground at the plot is still dry as a bone, I did wake up and first thing I did was checked my butt ( :o!!) but only 1/2 full. :( :'(

Still no rain here :(. One or two drops on a couple of days but that is all. Remarkably everything seems to be holding up quite well though some yields, such as early potatoes are low, but the quality is excellent.

it's been dull, overcast and windy for days up here, but today the sun shone again and how quickly to the pots dry out ?  VERY quickly !  must be the wind i guess.

spent hours watering tonight.  here's hoping for a lovely weekend but as it's "Glasgow Fair" weekend, it's traditionally rubbish !  i'm looking for peace, calm tranquility and sun to build the new g/h that's coming tomorrow !!!

hee hee hee !

Recipe for peace, calm and tranquillity? - you erecting this with OH, the one who put your shed window in upside-down, inside-out, or whatever? ::) Ban him from the premises and phone a friend ;D  Fingers crossed for sun for you - our forecast is sun, sun, sun and just hope that some comes your way.  Bet you're SO excited! Spect that mammoth task of moving raised beds and clayey soil limbered you up for the construction work nicely 8) Lay in the cans. You'll need em.  Good luck!

Hi all.
I've had an allottment with a friend for a while now, but want to branch out on my own.  I think that I need my lottie for a little me space, and that is not how it has turned out.  Any clues as to how to broach this?  We have both done a decent amount of work, but I either want the original space to myself, or I need to move on without spoiling the friendship.  Any suggestions from you experienced people?

Hyacinth

I don't have a lottie, N, but my thought is to keep it simple and keep it truthful. You need your own space now, you have the confidence to meet the challenge and you're ready to fly! Question = will your friend be able to cope with the existing plot alone or should you be thinking round finding a replacement partner for him/her? And are there vacant plots for you to go to quite soon, or will this be a plan for the future? I'd think that you keeping the existing plot alone would be a non-runner if your friend still enjoys the work and would be unfair in the circs.

Just my first thoughts.

roflmao - he was banned !  well he was at work !  got 75% of the base done, just needs a bit of cement now round the corners to hold it down.  got the ends and sides built but no use putting it all together until the base is ready which will be tomorrow.

the sun has been hot and shining all day long and i'm a nicely "been two weeks on the Med" tan now.  We've got good weather forecast for the rest of the weekend so someone up there must have listened to my pleading.

i was a happy happy bunny out there playing from dawn to about half an hour ago, but complete exhaustion got the better of me and had to come in.  so cut a huge bunch of sweet peas, had a lovely shower and now he's buying chinese ! got a beer in hand and life is just great.  I know it won't last (when the glazing goes in) so i'm enjoying every moment.

and we've got the eviction to look forward to tonight !
