My pleasure Lorna, I do not feel ashamed to declare myself a total novice when dealing with the mystical art of pumpkin growing ! I will be growing winter squashes for consumption, but I think the pumpkins will be purely for fun!

gosh, you lot sowing already. Think I might also be left at the starting post, no special secrets here either although I might try a liquid chicken manure...if I can stand the smell that is.

Jesse. Thought I would experiment, just sown a couple of seeds. As I have never grown anything (other than toms & cues)  this year will be a real learning year. I am a real novice but boy I am enjoying myself ;D I do get a supply of horse poo from family horse (when the kids remember to bring me some)
Lorna

Jesse

that's what it's all about isn't it, having fun and experimenting :D

Great fun, and the competition hasnt really even started yet. I try and explain to my gardening neighbours how enjoyable this site is, but I gather they think I am a bit loopy. Come to think of it, they are probably right  ;)

chuff

I have just bought giant pumpkin seeds, so count me in ;D

lorna

Curry. Oh dear, have you seen the post from Chuff? The lady has got seeds for GIANT pumpkins!! ::) ::)
Any American members out there that can tell me what my seeds might produce. They are HOWDEN and Conneticut Fields.

Jesse

I grew conneticut field last year, my largest pumpkin weighed 14.5lbs

I'm not an expert pumpkin grower so I'm sure they can get much bigger than that ;D

lorna

Jesse. Thanks for that. I will certainly be delighted if my first attempts get anywhere near that weight ;D

grawrc

I'll be delighted if they grow at all, given the start to this season. >:( >:( ::)

Curryandchips

40 lbs is my best shot so far, but I am sure I can do better if goaded. Sadly no pictures ...

lorna

Curry. OMG may we please have a  section for Smallest pumpkin????

grawrc

The cutest pumpkin? The ugliest pumpkin? The most misshapen pumpkin? the list goes on and on... ;D

myrtle

My Big Max and Mars are up and hatless!  No sign of Becky yet though.

lorna

Myrtle. They look good. It looks like I should have used bigger pot when I planted my two seeds. Still the main sow will be in couple of weeks or more so will make sure about size of pot. Do you pot them on further or do they then go straight in to ground?
Many thanks Lorna.

myrtle

I'm no expert on pumpkin growing, Lorna.  I only sow one seed per 3" pot and I shall pot up to a larger pot if the roots start to show through the bottom or if this darned cold weather continues.  I shall also sow direct into a prepared area at the lottie in about a month if I've prepared the area by then!!  :)

lorna

Thanks Myrtle. I will sow again bit later on..I have a greenhouse but I don't keep the temperature very high mainly because of the expense but it is enough to keep all my cuttings ok.
Lorna

Andy H

Will be trying to beat last years 138lb ;D

Jesse

:o there's no hope for me then! ;D ;D
