Jesse - for your records, I'm trying Dill's Atlantic Giant (I could regret this!!!). Plenty of garden compost in big hole in v. small patch. My only growing 'secret' is sinking a large flower pot right next to where plant will be for ease and accuracy of watering.
Might also try some Italian seed I've been given - Pumpkin 'Peregrino' but only if it's suitable for growing up a fence. does anyone know anything about this variety, please?
Thanks for all your hard work.

grawrc

Thanks for the advice. I'm going to need all the help I can get  ;)

Now you're a god (goddess?) grawrc, you should be leading us mere mortals !

mmm haven't been on the training course yet.. :-[ :-[ :P

Don't forget you can grow squash upwards on frames, they take up less space, and Pumpkins, you can kinda wind the stems around themselves in a spiral...............if you can keep up with them! Or you can just do what I do let it run rampant and then moan about the thing taking over the plot! ;D ;D

I blame you lot, you're a bad influence.  I do grow 'Becky' for eating and Halloween but I had absolutely no intention of attempting to grow giant veg of any kind, or joining in with the competition  So what did I get while 'browsing' with a friend in Jack's Patch GC, today??

Huh? Huh? Go on! Ask! What did you get, Myrtle?

'Big Max' blooming pumpkin seeds, that's what!  >:( So now I gotta join in, haven't I?

Got a secret weapon too, so there! :P

supersprout

'fess up myrtle, what you got ::)

myrtle

I'll whisper it to you Supersprout, but don't tell anyone else. It's tortoise poo!!   ;D

Serious for a moment, I was quite excited this morning, my first winter squash has germinated, a variety called cobnut, available from the organic gardening catalogue.

I will not be sowing my winning (  ;D ) pumpkins for a few weeks yet.

Watch out Curry, I have sent away for  the seeds for my "winner"  ;D today, it's called "mammoth".  Who could fail with a name like that?  Well, I could probably! ;D busy_lizzie

The 3 Leopards are regular eating machines (grass, weeds, cabbage leaves and cactus) and it's surprising how much they produce. Over the winter I have been collecting it in a small plastic dustbin just outside the greenhouse, with the paper I use to pick it up.  The bin is now full! Normally I just add it to the compost bin but this year, I shall use it in my hotbed for MY winning pumpkin!  ;)  :P

Curryandchips

Everyone seems to have secret weapons, I have none :(, so may well be left at the starting post ! However the object is to have fun, so that is what I will do ...
