Allotments 4 All

Well, it's official, have finally gone mad, I think.....eversince I joined this site, I've had a harder and harder time killing things,  pests I mean  ::). Have been saving snails, slugs etc. But yesterday, I think I reached new plateau....I was asked to cut back an overgrown ivy, and found myself trimming round slugs so's I didn't disturb them... ::) then Pat (lady I was working for) brought out a coffee, sat for chat, and she was tinkering with another ivy in a pot. I yanked her hand back and "Watch out , Pat! There's a wasp!" She removed hand and said thank you, my answer?"Well, you nearly squished it!" She knows me :-\........But most amazing thing, this year I have barely had any pest damage........ Lottie  ;D

Allow me to disagree, unless I am mad as well, although in my case it probably is true.

I am the same regarding slugs, snails, wasps etc, and consider all creatures to have a right to live. The crop yields I am getting mean there is plenty for everyone ... so I can have a clean conscience as well  :)

The thing I like about having an allotment, is that I can garden MY way, and no one will tell me off.

Thanks TM and Derek, but at this rate, think I must be talking too nicely, things have gone from the sublime to the ridiculous.......... ::) ::) ::) It's taking me forever to do anything, with hitch hikers.... :-\

Me too!  I'm a real pacifist.  I couldn't kill a slug with my bare hands if my life depended on it ;D   I've been pussyfooting round a wasps nest all summer and as for cutting a slug in half with the scissors like some peeps on here can do  :o   I just couldn't do it.  I couldn't tread on one either.

I can let my dog explore rat holes though as that doesn't involve me  ;D

I am another 'no kill' policy person.  Well maybe a house fly if its in the kitchen!!  wasps, spiders etc. get a glance and leave alone.  Got jars all over the house to capture the bees and put back outside along with trapped butterflies etc.

LOL! Very slippery to step on, bit like banana skin....Have wasps nest in garden too, have had to tie OH down to stop him from nuking them! Acting like they're alien child-eating species.. ::) ::) ::) But they just buzz about, doing their thing...just have to think of little squidgy creatures, moseying about, doing their business, blissfully unaware...then...splat!! I'd be really p*****d off! Would haunt too, be scary, headless, slug, ghost thingy! Lottie  ;D

Errr - so how come you're happy to hoover up lil compost flies in another thread then, Lottie?   ;)

As for me, I won't kill anything unless I have too.  Try to be wildlife friendly but I will own up to killing the odd slug or snail that the birds/frogs/toads don't eat up.

Does vacuuming up compost flies kill them then? I bet if you wanted it to, then you would be unsuccessful ! ! !

LOL! TM, you so know that I did not mean that!! So no fair! Not into PC, or the rest of it, was having light-hearted, banter, talking bout flies, they not pink or purple, they're black.....OK? Bring back original Cpt Pugwash and Magic Roundabout........Lottie   ;D :D ;)

I'm a non killer but if my slugs and snails want to commit suicide by throwing themselves headlong in to beer then who am I to argue.  Other than that I generally let nature take care of nature - wasps larva eat caterpillars, ladybird etc eat aphids etc etc etc.

LOL! Can imagine you using similar methods as chaps in "Oh dear " thread in shed, Jags.....Bet you pricey, too.. ;D ;)

This morning, my daughter called me into the living room, from the kitchen where I was preparing carrots for the freezer. She pointed to the floor in front of the settee, and I saw a small mouse, intent on sniffing around. Since we live in a suspended wooden floor type building, I was not at all surprised to see this creature, particularly since I replaced the floor several years ago, and fitted rockwool insulation underneath the new timber boards. I explained that it is not a good idea to try and grab it, as it may bite, so picked up a fleece off the settee and carefully laid it round the mouse, then over it, in order to contain it. After picking it up and checking it was ok, I then wandered up the street with it to deposit it in the school playing field.

I must have looked a strange sight, wandering barefoot up the street with just jogging pants on (no top), holding a fleecy top ...

Hope that mouse is doing ok ...
