Leeks

What are everybody's leeks looking like now?  Mine are still looking like no more than big chives. I guess I am not going to have prize winning leeks this year!

oursare too Janet but we're not worrying too much as they have along growing season. I'm not sure when i planted them as a forgot to write it down - but it seems ages ago so time will tell. I'm not bothered about the size (Paul is very relieved!!  ::)- hope he doesn't read this!!!) cos I think they'll still be tasty anyway

mine look like small chives at the moment but when we get some heat I'm sur they catch up .

Don't panic. I usually wait until my early spuds are out and then plant leeks in their place. It's amazing how fast they grow once their in the ground. Those already in will certainly start to move over the next few weeks. Don't forget, leeks have anything up to 10 months to grow. If you want big ones, don't trim the roots before you plant. If you want smaller ones, then trim and plant closer. (My leeks are still in trays and about as thick as a drinking straw. No problem.)

::) Mine are as thick as a 30 amp fuse wire ??? left some in their tray and trans-planted some in T/roll centres, how am I doing so far ??? ;D

Mine are the size of chives ... I can live with that ... not so happy about the aphids feasting on them though  >:(

Mine are chive sized too. But is it OK to plant them out at this size - they look as if they are getting a bit 'tray-bound?

I just tip the whole tray full as is into a space in my garden, let them grow away there and when the space is ready on the plot, dig em up and plant them individually up there.

i planted mine in the ground weeks ago, about 2" tall now, i was hoping to keep them there and thin them out by taking every other one as a baby leek, is this ok or do i need to transplant them and trim there roots etc?

Quite correct, chives are at least 30 amp.  ;D ;D

mine are as thick as 3 amp fuse wire...o-hang on...it IS fuse wire..

Ha - while digging my bean bed I have slowly been accumulating all the bits of an old Victorian fireplace - unfortunately not in a reclaimable state which is a pity as I could do with a reclaimed fireplace for the front room  :)
