Would you support my campaign for new allotments?

Hi,
I live in Paxcroft Mead, near Trowbridge in Wiltshire.  We have high density housing, yet green space which cannot be built on as it may occasionally flood.  There are allotments in Trowbridge, but they are massively oversubscribed (waiting lists are over half the size of the number of plots).  The local village (Hilperton) recently created some allotments, but quite rightly prioritised applications from parishoners, and the parish boundary excludes half of our estate (guess which half I live in!).
I have started discussions with  the Town Council regarding allocation of a small part of the communal land within the estate to allotments.  I am also starting a local poster campaign linked to an online petition.  My post asks 2 questions:
1.  Has anyone sucessfully achieved creating a new allotment site?  If so, any tips?
2. Would you show support bysigning my petition? http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/allotments/

If I can show the council huge support for the concept, and provide a list of prospective tenants I must surely succeed!

Wow!  35 signatures in a day, thank you all very much.

Sorry about the American site, I just used a very popular search engine and looked for a free online petition service - didn't even consider where it would be hosted.

Sorry again if they are begging for money, please don't think that I have anything to do with that.

On a positive note - I had a pleasant e-mail from my Town Mayor offering general support, but it has all gone quiet due to you-know-what.

I shall keep you posted on my progress!  Thanks again.

Hi all,
I've had lots of 'progress' with the campaign - my county councillor and town councillor agreed to meet me last week to discuss.  They were supportive, but it all sounds far more tricky than it should be.  I'd printed off a briefing pack for them (which they were impressed by) with the relevant Acts and a series of sections addressing what was required in order to get a site (happy to forward if anyone else would find useful in a similar situation).
Petition has now broken the 50 barrier - thanks to you all!
I also sought support from my local residents association (paxcroft mead community forum).  They have been great and have given some meaning to my efforts.  not only have they given me a section on the website (www.paxcroftmead.org.uk), I have a seat on the committe (allotments rep without a site!) and had the chance to address the residents at the AGM last night and formally launch my campaign.
Next step is to get the 6 local applicants and write formally applying for a site...

Well done!  Sounds like you are doing all the right things.
