I'm gonna cheat and say Thai 7 spices and Herbes de Provence. It's only two jars after all and it's too difficult to choose otherwise :P  ;D.

The spice would have to be pepper but I am not sure about the herb.

Corriander, I can use the seeds the leaves and the root, as with fennel (which is nice with fish). I prefer parsley to corriander leaves. Basil may not grow to well  and there wont be tomatoes.

Are the books to be used for fire lighting because I sure as sure wont be reading them. A copy of a survival manual would be far more useful.

I second the vote for Rosemary and Cinnamon

I use them all the time, but not together  ;D

I am refreshed by the rain and the dew
And by thoughts of you...

Whatever you call it but definitely Garlic.

Mint, have grown so many different types and have it hanging in bunches drying, don't know if it will be any good but have run out of containers.  :)

Rosemary because I love the smell so much......plant some by the front door to keep the goblins out.   ;D

rosemary for all the wild animals I'd have to cook and eat, plus chilli as I am addicted to it and it can make the most boring thing more interesting!

I wonder what the definition of herb and spice is, if there is one. For example, I would think of coriander leaves as a herb but crushed coriander as a spice. Is it as simple as that?

I tend to think that spices come from seeds and bark (and at a push some roots although I tend to regard these as flavourings) and herbs come from leaves and the stems of herbaceous plants.
