                  Very pleased with my spring cabbage it as done very well, but had to keep it netted all year to keep the pigeons of it.

Thanks Tim , yes l do like my cabbage as I do all my Veg, (think it was the way I was brought up there was no L do not like this and I do not like that when I was a child). by the way how do I do Chinese seaweed.

Cut out rib - roll up the leaves tightly - slice across VERY thinly. Heat 4" oil in 8" deep pan till a shred sizzles quickly - fry small batches of shreds till crisp but still green  - they FIZZ! - drain on paper & sprinkle sparingly with salt, caster sugar or both. Serve soon.

That is so impressive Richard, but is it not a faff having to get all that netting off to weed it, or have you got it mulched? busy_lizzie

I love cabbage too but only one sort - This year I am growing Greyhounds, Durham Earlies, Wheelers Imperial and Excel F1 (these were given to me).  All conicals.  Big lover of spring greens and cabbage but have not got any on my plot as I only got it around Christmas.  I like mine stir fried in butter with garlic and maybe some fresh chili.

My absolute favorite is brussel tops..How anyone can say they are cow fodder is anyone's guess.

Yep  - they're good stir fried with garlic and chili too.  ;D

           The cabbage plants were planted out in early september, and stood all through the winter, not many weeds grow that time of year so it is about March time when the ground starts warming up and the weeds start.  I then roll the netting up and hoe between the cabbage and then give a dressing of nitro chalk.  As long as the cabbage continue to grow well the weeds are suppressed. As to the other question about the netting it is no trouble to roll it back, and it does save the crop from the dreaded pigeons.

:) Absolutely no problem if you follow my system [ I must patent it] !!! Plant through black fleece/ground control fabric, and you never have to weed again. I plant out my overwintering cabbage, brussels, and cauliflowers, [already eating cauliflowers now in Glasgow area] in July. Therefore, the only time you need to lift the netting, is to cut the cabbages or cauliflowers. If you choose a small size mesh netting, you also defeat cabbage white butterflies, which are already flying.

So, which suppressant? The Agralan material I used grew the biggest weeds I've ever had - killing the dwarf beans.

Only afterwards did I see that you were supposed to put a 1" mulch over.

:)The cheapest one I can find!! At the moment from Savacenter at £4 for a roll 1.5m x 8m. I do not cover mine with mulch, but obviously you could and that would help to keep the fabric in place.

Thanks for the piccy Richard!  I have 6 spring cabbages on my plot and they look just like your piccy so I did it right!  hoorah!!
