Saw 2 tortoiseshells and a comma today! Tortoiseshells not surprising, but I've never seen spring commas before. Was I chuffed!

Lucky you, I've not seen any butterflies so far this year.  I saw several reports of Commas being seen over the weekend

Seen a couple of Tortoiseshells but no Commas.......lucky, lucky you. ;D Thay are pretty. I would also love to see a Swallowtail
I guess I shall have to go to Norfolk  :-\ ;)
I was born with nothing and have most of it left.

Saw a large, bright yellow butterfly yesterday.  Don't know much about butterflies, but this one was really striking.  Any ideas?

Flighty

Galina it was possibly a female Ghost moth rather than a butterfly.

Maybe a brimstone? I reckon to see one a year, and it's usually the first around....

Bright yellow at this time of year, almost definitely a Brimstone and a male, the females are much less bright in colour
Kind regards

Yes indeed and I wish I had had the camera to hand - had it been a female ghost moth I would be equally excited - they are a little darker and the wings are a different shape.

Lovely picture indeed Big Man :)

don't really know many flutterbys, but did see the dreaded Cabbage White the other day on the lotti :o :o :o Didn't realise they can come out this early. Is this possible???

Robert_Brenchley

The first Small Whites appear around March, Large Whites usually April or May. So yes, it's perfectly possible.
