Boiled up some gigandes supposed to be drying out for storage, but going mouldy....added olive oil, salt, pepper, parsley and coriander - absolutely lovely. I simply CANNOT increase their numbers fast enough. I intend to put in 20 seedlings next year. Or 30.

Also chewed raw a final runner bean and a slightly manky mangetout.

Are gigandes the same as what we'd call lima beans or some folks call them butter beans? They take a long growing season here.

Grew those in 2009 but we ate them green after boiling and buttering.

They look lovely! We tried eating the seed from some very large White Lady runner beans - they were pretty good!

What an awesome thread!

Swiss Chard, Turnip leaf, Cabbage leaf, various mixed leaf salad, a round lettuce, Mizuna, a few Tsoi sim flowers, Thyme, Rosemary, Continental Parsley, Curly Parsley and some mixed micro herbs/salad (first try, as seen on HFW River Cottage, not sure as it just seems like some cress, but tasty, maybe a waste of seeds?) oh, and some Rocket.

This was lunch and dinner, and quite a surprising haul for November, I think lucky weather here :)  Makes it all worthwhile!

Tell my about Mizuna!

GrannieAnnie Mizuna is fab, I was given a mixed pack of salad leaves for my birthday, I chucked them in without reading the pack so I was eating the Mizuna for weeks thinking it was Rocket!   It has just kept going all summer, it doesn't seem to bolt in the hot weather and has just kept going until now.....  I think it is a Japanese leaf I will go and check for you :)

The flea beetles love it though... So mine is always a little holey x

Further down the page... Though I fancy a few of the others too x

Oh now I know what it is!! It popped up in a seed mix (most probably an "oriental salad" mix). I had not grown it or seen it before.

Am I right in thinking it has a bit of a peppery twang? I quite liked it and nibbled away on the plot as I harvested it.  :)
Great in salads!

Thanks, Ruth, I'll give it a try- especially like that it is both heat and cold tolerant. That's a real plus, besides the appearance.
