Something really weird happened to me yesterday and I don't know what it was..any ideas/

I had a bad night, I had eaten late and had coughed up sevearl times in the night.
John got upat 8 am, I was tired ans stayed in bed, shortlyafter I felt cold and started to shiver, very quickly the shivering became very violent, shook the bed and my breathing became very rapid. John piled quilts on me and put a heating pad in the bed.  This violent shivering lasted about three hours, twice I vomited and had got the runs. By about lunchtiome it seemed to settle down, the vomiting etc kept going but the shivering stopped and my braething went back to normal. My pulse was racing and pouding in my head.

Afterwards Iwas very weak, stayed in bed all day, sometimes vomiting although there was nothing but bile.

Today, I have got up a bit, still very weak, no vomiting although I do still have the runs a bit.

Looking back, I think I should have called an ambulance but oo late now

Does anyone have any idea what this might have been

It has all the symptoms of shock but why?? It was very severe and very scary.

I'm not claiming to be medically trained..but..vomiting and 'runs'..violent reation...sounds like classic case of food poisoning.. ???..it takes several hours to 'brew' in body before proper symptoms kick in...before that there is just general feeling of unwell.
What was it what you ate late that night?
Was there anything that you had but John didn't?

Hope you are feeling better now. Not medical but I'm with goodlife - sounds like a nasty case of food poisoning. I have discovered that two people can eat the same thing but will react to any nastiness differently.

By the  sounds of it Jeannine I think you were having 'rigours'.   Nasty experience.   I get this now and then when I have bad bouts of IBS when I have diarrhoea.  Its the body under stress caused by you vomiting and then the runs, in other words you are losing fluid along with the salts etc in your blood stream.  Last time I had this was 10 January.  I shook for an hour but I have diazepam on standyby now for this and that calms my body down.   Also try and get more fluids into yourself to replace what you have lost.   This is my opinion but with your medical problems I think you should have contacted the medics.

Hope you feel better soon.  Sounds like you have a 'bug'.   nasty.

Pretty similar to a bout of sunstroke that I suffered from about 10years ago. However, perhaps where you live it is not very feasible at this time of year.

I bet it was the apple pie ;D

Jeannine

Thanks folks,I ate home made pea soup, frozen, both John  and I had had it a few times so I don't think it was that.More like what Carol said except the shivering and fast breathing came quite some time before the vomiting etc.

It started about three hours after I took me 5 am meds, don't know if that is significant.

Very odd, but something I don;t want to go through again.

See what the Dr says when I next see him.

I am typical fool, I should have called him at the time but it was Saturday morning etc etc... you know, the usual it will go away soon.

I think the doctor would be the best course of action Jeannine
When I get old I don't want people thinking
"What a sweet little old lady"........
                             I want em saying
"Oh Crap! Whats she up to now ?"

Could be a reaction to some medication you are taking. I'd go to the doc ASAP! Hope you are feeling better now.

I hope you're feeling better now.

Sorry to hear about your illness.  It sounds very similar to what I had about three years ago which turned out to be e-coli poisoning.

I had eaten a bar of Cadbury's turkish delight and it wasn't until 12 months later when a newscaster was reporting that a year had passed since the Cadbury incident that I then linked it to my illness.

I hadn't heard or read about the e-coli incident at Cadbury's when it happened; I was probably too ill.   My illness started when I was on holiday and I had bought my normal big bar to eat whilst away.  My OH didn't have any as he had a bar of his own different chocolate and consequently, he wasn't ill.

I was ill for over 6 weeks with the same symptoms as you.  By the time they decided to take a poo sample, the illness had almost cleared up and nothing was found.  I too had that awful bile and all the other symptoms you mentioned.

It may be that you just have a bug but if you are not better in a few days, I think you should see a doctor.

Get well soon Jeannine.  xx

Hi Jeannine i hope you are now feeling better. I agree what you had sounded like rigors, this is very usual with someone with a high temperature which would be typical with a stomach bug or food poisoning. treatment for the rigors is to bring the temperature down, so dont be tempted to wrap up etc. strip off to light clothing tepid sponging or a cool bath if you feel up to it and an anti pyrexic if you can tolerate it ie paracetamol. as much as the diarrhoea and vomiting the temperature would have made you feel really ill too. as someone who has had their share of tummy bugs from work (norwalk, norovirus) i know just how ill you will/are feeling.
try and keep your fluids up with littles sips if that is all you can tolerate, something isotonic is best diaoralyte (available from chemists) or powerade or lucozade or something similar and dont be tempted to try and eat until you really feel like it then something bland
i hope you feel better soon hon

I am comp;etely back to normal today. Yesterday, the dat after the bad day I was tired in the morning but managed to cook dinner and make a cake, I ate half a dinner even, still tired but otherwise OK.

I don't think it was food poisoning etc I have got over it far too quickly, and the shivering and rapid brething came way before the other

I have a feeling it was two different things together.. but gone thank goodness.

Something I need ti chat to Jonathan (my Dr) about though as my body went through some very scary trauma, maybe not a good idea ay my age etc.

Thank you all.

Juist as an afterthough, a few years ago I had surgery via spinal block and got severe shivering and fast breathing in recovery, I was told it was as a result of the meds they gave me.

I know this is daft but Joh has been putting my 5 am meds in container for years , the alatm goes off and  I swall ow them, I am wondering if he made a mistake and gave me something wrong..
