He's an irritant, but he'd cause a lot less mayhem if he was just ignored.

As is so often the case if someone is on a wind up, ignore or engage in a careful manner, they're then left with the choice of integrating or giving up. I've worked on forums before where trolls have been assimilated into productive posters, if handled carefully. It is hard to ban someone permanently, so best to learn to live with them if you can.

I am not taking sides here and I want to stress that, he had said some awful things to folks and I have retaliated and told him so, I don't know why but it did seem to me that there was a element of childishness in them so maybe he had a mental problem, not going much further into that, but in the case of this post he had tried to be a productive member of the forum. I tend not to hold grudges so would give any member the benefit of doubt or another chance whatever you wish to call it. Perhaps what amphibian is talking about may have happened here with him.

The problem I have with all this is..if he did in fact have some sort of a mental problem that produced some of the things he said and the way he said them..then I would not feel right judging him, we all have friends or relatives, or know someone who has a mental problem and acts very inappropriately but generally we do not refuse to talk to them as we realise the problem.

I have a son with mental problems who has said some rather disgusting things when angry or put down, yet he would not deserve to be shunned.. I do not know the person in question other than what I have read so cannot really make a decision. I have heard  some very inflammatory  and offensive things said by many members over the years though, some directly to me  but as I don't hold grudges  I still interact with them even though sometimes it is not easy.

What if is all well and good but we can only judge him by his actions and words here.
If he has problems then what he does is understandable,  but if he doesn't and he's allowed to continue as before then he'll be laughing at all of us.
Regardless there are limits which as far as I'm concerned he has gone way beyond on several occasions and I am not prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt on the basis of what if.

Two thoughts here, if one must judge someone one can judge negative or positive, if it is someone I don't know and I suspect he is ill I am not going to judge him badly, why would I. I am the grown up here
Actually I would not judge him at all.  I would feel I was kicking a person while down if I was mean or shunned someone I believe has a mental problem, I would expect most people to think this way XX Jeannine
