i know its not exactly computers and internet but... i want to get my hubby a sat nav for christmas and i have not the first idea what to look for or what is a good price.  have googled obviously but there is just too much information and i really dont now the first thing.

all i want is something he can use in unfamiliar towns and cities when he travels for work.  dont need any bells and whistles or fancy features.
my budget is tight; are second hand ones off ebay ok or is it better to buy new?
any advice or recommendations welcome. thanks  :)

Try a Garmin Nuvi, they,re small easily updated and will take a memory card with extra maps or music. Best of all is that you can turn the "voice" off!!

laurieuk

I would definitely go for  a new one ,a used one might need updating and so might not have newer roads on it. If you go to somewhere like Currys they will explain what they have and the difference between different models.

laurieuk

I have a garmin and the cost to update after the first free one is as dear as buying a new one .

we have a navman, bought off amazon new, does everything we need and has a wide screen  :)

I think in all of them you can switch the voice off.  But it is less intrusive than a person sitting next to you telling you where to turn when you already know the way!

we've got a tom tom no problems. I'm not very savy when it comes to new tech so haven't realized you could switch the voice off or play music on them ::) ::)
And I still take a map with me just in case.  ;D ;D  Like Laurieuk I wouldn't buy 2nd hand.

naff

Laurie, try ebay for your updates £15 for four updates over 2 yrs and all saved on PC to upload to any Garmin!!

sarah

thanks for the pointers I will do some more research.   :)

Garmin!!!

I bought a brand new one through amazon last December for around £65 and it has been FANTASTIC! I have driven all over the country with it and it is brill, very simple to use.

Ive a tomtom go i think its great no more arguments in the car about which turning to take  ;). Mine was brought second hand and i paid £20. Easy to update if needed. I have also brought the European map and so far has taken us to Spain, Holland and France for our camping holidays. Great things wouldn't be without mine :)

I love my tom-tom  :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*

Bought it years ago, before the prices started coming down, but has proved invaluable.

Wouldnt be without my Tom Tom. Dont know how people managed before! Always plan the route on a map first though.

Had a Garmin Nuvi briefly but it didnt give you the option to avoid motorways, which the Tom Tom does. They might have improved though, and they do have a better battery life so could be used as a basic GPS for walking.

sarah

great i will check them out too.  ;)

we have Tom Tom 1 but I misunderstood and paid over £30 for a years updating and was then told I could get them for free. it can be handy but takes you to some very funny ways. somebody said very wisly that beside the fastest and shortest rout ethere should be the most sensible route option

I bought a binatone, but there were a lot of streets missing, so it's best to go by postcodes.
Dunno if this is the same with all satnavs though.

I walk my dogs every morning down a lane to the fields, cul de sac, nearly every morning there is a posh car with some business type bloke asking the way to the Forest of Arden Hotel, their sat nat takes them down there.

Thinking of charging Forest of Arden for my service to the community lol  :)

ACE

Is that the enchanted Forest of Arden wot that Willy shagspeare kept on about.

As for sat nags you should try my ole lady.
