Not a Dyson if you want to get it up & down stairs!!! It's really annoying when the Mrs interrupts my tv viewing to get me to move it upstairs!  ::)

Depends whether you want an upright or cylinder.   I find myself using my Henry Plus more and more.  If I had to have only one cleaner it would be Henry.  However I do like the upright for a big area.  I would be suspicious of a light upright one. I think it might not have much power but I may be out of date.  I will be interested in what replies you get.

small

Henry is terribly heavy though, especially with the turbo head and when it's full.  I struggle to get mine up and down stairs.

I just had a look at Which?.  They have 26 Best Buys.  The lightest is a small upright Dyson at 5.4kg.  There are 2 Bosch cylinders about 1kg heavier.  All the rest sre quite a bit heavier, cylinders around 8kg and uprights 9-10kg.  If you want model numbers and specs let me know and i'll copy them for you.  What do you have at the moment?

Well Ceres I am now using our Moms small upright cleaner and its great. Its the Electrolux Boss Superlight. She bought it about 4 or 5 years ago   I know they do advertise lighter vacs in the Saga mag. I can't manage the dyson we have so Tone has to use that while I use the lighter one
When I get old I don't want people thinking
"What a sweet little old lady"........
                             I want em saying
"Oh Crap! Whats she up to now ?"

Oh shirl, you may have the answer to my dreams !   On one level so an upright is

what I'm after,   no stairs but can't stand the backache of a cylinder anymore.

Had an Electrolux Boss, very workable but a --- to get upstairs  [ past life  in a house ],

Good luck manics,  maybe the Boss lightweight is a good option.     :D

I only checked the ones that Which? rated as Best Buys - the ones that they have tested as best for different types of cleaning, ease of use etc. etc.  There are a further 82 vacs they tested which aren't Best Buys and a few which are Don't Buys!

Just had a look for the Electroux but it's not listed so guessing it's no longer available.  They do have details of some new vacs that they call stick vacuums which are like small uprights but cordless/rechargeable.

Yes Flossy you could push this one around so easily. Doesn't do stairs though but the dyson we have has a long hose so its no problem. The lightweight is no problem to get upstairs its so light that is if you don't have any health probs

Thanks for looking for me, Ceres, very much appreciated..we have a vax zero swift at the mo, our carpet has a dense pile so, pushing against it's killing both of us  ;D
thabks, shirley, will look that one up  ;D

I have a Miele Cat and Dog (cylinder) which weighs 7.7k. I had a Dyson Animal before and this one is a lightweight by comparison. It does, however, have strong suction which makes it quite tough to push on the carpet, although you can change the settings. I find it OK to carry about though,

thanks, Anne..maybe Ray will have to do ALL the vacuuming for me ?
well, until HIS back goes  ;D

The Henry weighs 6.6kg.  It is not as heavy as my panasonic up right.

My best bargains, my upright cleaners. Both old Hoover Juniors, bought as a job lot for £15 a few years ago and still going strong. 8) One is kept 'up'; the other 'down'. If either needed replacing I'd ask on Freecycle. Smashing, they are.

I've got a Sebo upright. Recommended by my chiropractor several years ago but instead went with a which best but which I complained about from day one. It isn't light at 7.4kgs but is light to push around. I felt £250 was to much to pay but then it went down to £202 at John Lewis so we got it as I was in agony every time I used the Bosch cylinder. I can't praise the Sebo enough. I can vac the sofas & get to the top of the stairs no problem. It adjusts to floors from carpets & has all the tools on board.

I've got a Miele which is very good, fairly light and very well made. Stood out as being better quality than any of the others I looked at.

Used to clean for an elderly lady who had one of these http://www.qvcuk.com/ukqic/qvcapp.aspx/app.detail/params.item.829380/walk.yah.UKHG-U087 . It wasnt that powerful but did the job and was very light. Comes with an extra dustbuster-type vacuum that you can hang over your shoulder and is great for doing stairs.

Why not go back to basics,

I use a broom to sweep the carpet and find it gets all the wood chip and rubbish up in one go. A good stiff yard broom will always beat the vac any day.

Got them back now to put some tread on them
