Is anybody using the above this year. I had Norton on my laptop last year (it's now run out) with no problems. I am now looking at getting the 2009 version. Quite good deals on ebay at the moment. I have downloaded AVG free in the meantime, but boy it's slow.

My Norton sub just ran out & I've been using AVG for the last week... haven't noticed it being any slower & have noticed some improvements. Mine's a 3 year old lappy, full of junk... What's yours?

I'd be interested to hear other Norton vs AVG experiences too...

Hi,

Laptop is a one year old toshiba, got Norton at the same time as the laptop. I've had no problems with Norton, but when using AVG on a fast scan it still takes about an hour (i could set it to scan before bed and then set it to shutdown) was just wondering what the new ones like. For sale at about £16 on ebay with up to three users, and comes with the following.

Antivirus
Spyware protection
Two-way firewall
Identity protection
Antiphishing
Network monitoring
Bot protection
Rootkit detection
Browser protection
Internet worm protection
Intrusion prevention
OS and application protection
Web site authentication
Pulse updates
Norton Insight
SONAR behavioural protection
Antispam
Parental Controls & confidential information blocking

Been using AVE free for a few years after gettng peed off with all the junk from Macafee (including being difficult to unload when I wanted to get rid). Yes, AVG is a bit slow, but it works and it's free, so I'm not going to look a gift horse in the mouth :)

It's nice to have a system which doesn't need AV, thanks to Linus Torvalds of Suomi.

Kev,
This is going to be an ever debate.
I ditched 'Zone Alarm' only because it slowed my 'puter' so much although the protection was brilliant.
I now have 'Avira'. free & OK so far (the pop up upgrade get on ya tits but Heh)

Switched to AVG when my computer crashed a couple of weeks ago.  It's free (as long as you don't get lured into buying the bells-and-whistles version) and it seems very effective. My amateur IT-wizard friend, who recommended it to me, swears by it.  Norton is a pain.

Spudly,
Depends on what you want out of the bag so to speak.  AVG (or check out AVAST) is free and does a really excellent but basic job.  It may not have the bells and wistles like Parental Controls or antispam that Norton has but that also means it will not consume system resources like Norton does.  I do IT for a living and personally I would take AVG over Norton anyday but I dont need or want most of the stuff Norton offers.

I'd go for AVG or Avast over Norton as they use less resources. But have heard that the 2009 version is a bit better than the old ones.

Just make sure that you remove the old antivirus before installing another one, as having two on the PC can cause major problems.

avast is easiest the best will not slow your pc down as i  have run tests for a known virus on my pc  using 4 well known and readily available free programs  it was the only one to pick up the whole virus  its free although its free version is not as quite as long as some of the others this is easily got round   pm me if you want to know more  ;)

Uncle Joshua

I use Norton 360 too and its spot on.

i use the paid version of AVG i have 3 laptops and have 3 licenses that last 2 yrs, i used the free version but the paid for version is much more comprehensive with the protection that it provides and runs a lot quicker than the free version.

I use Commodo free firewall http://personalfirewall.comodo.com/download_firewall.html# and Avira Anti virus http://www.free-av.com.
I use Spybot for anti spyware http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html and a brilliant piece of software called Winpatrol http://www.winpatrol.com/download.html that tells you if software is trying to alter your settings.
These are all free and all brilliant.
Also Ccleaner is essential in my view http://www.ccleaner.com/.
