This was my allotment yesterday  ??? i couldn't cope with t he digging and couch grass any longer so i have given it up  :-\
i have, however got a new allotment plot which was someones up until a few weeks ago so all i have to do is pull up weeds which come out of the soil like butter and cover up a tiny bit with plastic! Hooray i am much happier, the plot is smaller in width and in length so i don't feel as daunted!
Just wanted to update you all!

That's what our lottie's looked like up until they rotovated it recently.
Which brings me to a question (not meaning to hijack your thread GJ).
The Lottie has been sprayed and rotovated although the spraying seems to have done nothing in killing the weeds.
Have the council caused more work for us with regard to ridding ouselves of the weeds? ???

Glad you got yourself a better plot GJ 8)

Rotavating will create lots more weeds, but they'll be easier to clear than it would have beeen to dig over from scratch.

Don't know whether to be sad or happy for you Jemma, best of luck with the new plot.

Jeremy.

Not surprised that you're relieved, Jemma. = Tim

Congratulations on your new plot Jemma.  Good for you too for being realistic.  Having an allotment is supposed to be an enjoyable experience as well as being a challenge, so there was no point taking on something that was going to be such a chore to you.  You will enjoy this plot much better and you will be able to keep on top of it.  I am sure someone else will take the other one on and be able to lick it into shape.  You enjoy your new plot.  :) busy_lizzie

Well done Jemma, I'm glad you've got a plot you're happier with  :)

Roy, have you finally got a lottie then?
Lottie-less until I can afford a house with it's own garden.

Moggle, yes and no, well they have sprayed & rotovated it and sent a letter stating same but not yet been called upon me to select a plot.
Maybe my plea to Santa will hurry them up. ??? ;D

Roti weeds and they come back worse but I feel that the state of our plot weeding would have been impos. so dug roughly into lumps that roti could handle and bunged loads mush compo on and roti in. Despite the weeds, I feel it was the best way to get it underway without ding my back in! We kept pulling and pulling the weeds and now there are not really very many on the plot. about half hour for 2 each week and not a single weed left!
and my back still exsists!

Just taken over another plot (3rd) andfriend of ours weeded it to perfection then left it, came back to total weed cover again! weeded again then left it for 3 weeks!!! weeds covered again. He should have spread the weeding out and been more regular, a lot less work probably. Now I am starting on it!!!

Hi Jemma, nice to hear you have a new allotment, Dont give up, if you must, cover the plot with black plastic and dig in the spring,Dont use a rotovator as they will make more work in the longrun, try to take pics and show them on her as its nice to know how others cope with there plots over the year, i've now just finished digging over my plot, and hopefully i will start two gardening courses with Learning Curve next month

Jemma, my heart sank when I saw the title of your thread and then when I saw the photo it sank further.  Thought "I can't blame the girl, that would daunt anyone" but then I read the rest of your post and I am SO pleased for you. As Busy says, it meant to be an enjoyable experience - don't want you sickened before you start  ;)  Still lots of hard work in front of you tho .....

Roy - our hopes are raised again  :D  Toes crossed as well for you now!!

Great news Jemma!
Don't feel guilty at all about the other plot. It is unfair of coucils to expect people to bring neglected plots back into cultivation - and those who do are miracle workers.
You can get on with the fun part now!

Sarah.

THANK YOU ALL!
Your encouragement is so greatly recieved! i have a new lease of life now! I am ready for my new plot, i just hope it's ready for me!

Sorry to hear you were so down Jemma, but glad to hear you have found another plot which is in better condition.

Our first family plot was like that and to be honest, we never won the battle.  It was very disheartening for me and my dad, but my new plot is great and thankfully, the ground is very soft so weeds do seem to come out with ease!  phew!!

Keep up the good work and keep posting plenty of pics!  ;D
