I thought shallots could be planted outside at this time of year, why in pots indoors??

If I was planting sets I'd put them straight out. I've never done well with shallots so I'm now growing walking onions, which have been in since October.

Yippee !  First sowing of the year!  Have just done Onions (Red Baron), Dahlias (Redskin), Morning Glory, Sweet Peas, Chillis and Parsley.  All inside in modules/loorolls in my conservatory.

Still grinning like a lunatic  ;D ;D ;D

Ooops - reading the above, I'd better check my few shallots - maybe I'll go and do them at the lottie nex week ....

Planted four rows of shallots, two rows of Yellow Moon and two rows of Pikant. :)

Also met Dave down the lottie not seen him before what a nice chap, he gave me some garlic so I planted a row of them. :)

Also prepared two more beds, will try and put some onions in this weekend although I think Jane wants to get going on the other plot  :o

Happy Happy Happy ;D ;D ;D

Nothing yet, but I'm just about to go and plant the shallots. Morning Glory so early Pippy good luck....   :o

Hi Saddad,

Yes - I know, I thought of doing it later but in Febs Gardeners World Mag it says "Sow February, Plant on april, plant out June.    I only did 6 so plenty more for later! ;D

I am a bit of a novice with it tho .... tempted by cheap seeds at 3 packs for £1!! ;)  ;D

This is early sowing for me - last year I didn't sow anything until mid March!  Probably won't do anything else for another 3 weks now ...

If you have them in the house they will germinate ok but the foilage is very tender... anything below 5c and they will turn white and die... but ifyou keep them warm they will get huge... try pinching out the tops if they get to 6 leaves and see it they sprout from the leaf nodes, I've never been brave enough to do it myself...  :-[

Just finished sowing Aubergines, more Broad Beans, 3 different varieties. (determined to have a freezer full this year!)
But have now run out of windowsill space as also have previously sown veg, flowers etc. on there! :(

Off to the garage to see if I can knock something together to get more on! ;D

I know how you feel, our window sills groan under the weight by the end of the spring!! Post a pic of whatever you knock together to give us inspiration!!  ;D

They are all in my conservatory.  It is heated - kept to 16 degrees at night at the mo ....

I'm planning getting one of those mini greenhouses with a set of shelves for hardening off in a month or so so I will be running in and out of the house with them!  I think that may slow them down too?

Thanks for the advice re: pinching out!  I'll be doing the same with the sweet peas!

Barnowl

Presumably you only pinch out the flowers and the chillies - don't imagine the onions would take kindly to it?

pippy

Oh gosh no - don't pinch out Onions!   I may not know what I'm doing with the flowers but that bit I am certain of!   and the onions and sweet peas will be going in a cold frame a soon as they are established to slow them down ...

Can never remember how and when to pinch out the chillis ... is it 3 leaves or five?  And dont't you have to keep pinching out as it grows to get it to bush?    I seem to forget every year ... must be early dementia ;D

I have given in and sown banana shallots, onions, aubergines and some biannual flowers that I'm hoping I might get to flower this year if I start them early enough!

I confess I've never pinched out chilli plants, I did try this on some of my aubergines last year but they cropped so late I didn't notice any difference.... :-\
If it's not pouring with rain, I'm either in the garden or at the lottie! Probably still there in the rain as well TBH....🥴
