hi there
i went into Ikea yesterday and saw some bags that can be used as planters.
could i use them for veg?  ???
i am starting to think my allotment wont be ready for much this season as so much is still over grow. :-[  they are about £2 a bag so thought i could get a few of these and grow some thing in them.

anyone got any ideas?

thanks Paula

Hi Paula, I have ordered some  potato bags, probably the same sort of thing. Never done it before but decided it was worth a try.

Not unlike my potato planters but prettier colours  ;D
I had great success with carrots in a plastic toy box type tub a few years ago. I think your veg will do well.
We will have to compare notes/pictures in the summer  :)

I also have three of the plastic toy tubs what I grow carrots in but Spuds the bags look ideal and at two quid they are a bargain, I'd buy more than you want and store a few away for another time.  ;D ;D ;D

When I read the first post I thought "why not just use old compost bags?" but I must say they look good, although they are not that big. Good job they give you care instructions- I would have been off to the dry cleaner's otherwise! ;D

I have found a link to the potato kits I have ordered from Suttons;
http://www.suttons.co.uk/Shop/Seed+Potatoes/Bargain+Potato+Planter+Kit+220160.htm

There is quite a bit about container grown veg on the BBC website;
http://www.bbc.co.uk/gardening/basics/techniques/growfruitandveg_cropsinpots2.shtml

This site gives quite a long list of things that can be grown and the best varieties;

Those will look good on a balcony - nice and cheerful!
Tomatoes, mini Cucumbers, Pumpkins, Beans, Salad leaves in between the other veg. I'm going to use the old boxes (similar to toy boxes) for carrots and onions as my soil is heavy clay. And if I want to do more later in the season I was going to use old compost bags. But anything you want to grow and eat really :)

mummybunny

Thanks cornykev might have to pop down and have a look  ;D will be nice to have a bit of peace other half hates going to ikea so he can stay at home with the kids  ::)

If you look at Nippie's link the potato planter bags are about the same size.....but more expensive.

It's quite a long way for me to go to Ikea too, that always annoys me! Especially since they've put not one but 2 distribution centres closer!
