Allotments 4 All

This is our first year of growing any food, brought on due to us now having some outside space, a christmas present of a 'Grow Your Own Chilis' Kit and a birthday present that my partner received of a load of young veg/salad plants from an organic grower.

So we currently have in the conservatory:

(from the chilli kit)
2* Hungarian Hot Wax Chilli plants
2* Anaheim Chillis
1* Tabasco Chilli
15* Jalapeno Chillis

(from the veg\salad gift)
4 Tomato plants (2  variaties)
2 Outdoor cucumber plants

Outside in containers we have:

(from the veg\salad gift)
Rainbow Chard
Mizuna
Rocket
Baby Gem
4* Borlotti Beans
4* Runner Beans
5* Peas
4* Courgette (2 Yellow)
4* Strawberries

Veg we've sown
Potatos (2 lots of 5 plants a month apart)
Onions (2 Containers a month apart)
Carrots
Butternut Squash
Tumbling Toms (in hanging basket)
Loads of herbs


All of these seem to be looking happy, and we are using the leaves as and when already and they are might tasty!

My question is.... is there anything else that we can sow now in late May that may give us some nice food late into the year or maybe very early next year?... broccoli? swede?

Any suggestions would be muchly appreciated.

Apart from your conservatory what growing space  do you have?

Most squash and French beans.. later on winter salads like Chicory and Chinese veg, winter radish... winter lettuce.. as Mick says how much space have you got?

About 3 or 4 large square pots (about 16") for the moment. But others could be added if I've missed out something particularly tasty!

When the tender stuff like courgettes has given up the ghost later in the year put in some winter salads... nothing like having your own in the winter, start them off in August...

hiya, adrian, welcome to the site, carrots will overwinter in a pot, started off in about august, you could also look out for late potatoes so you can have them for christmas, we grow winter radish later on, great in stir fries , as saddad says, winter salads are brilliant
spinach might make it in a container ?
mind you, you've still got time for more peas, beans, turnips, salads so's you don't run out in between  ;D

Ok, Winter salads and spinach are on the list.

When is the best time to sow swede/turnip, Kale/Cabbage (fancy some Cavallero), or broccoli. Am I too late for those this year?

 Hi adrian h from another adrianh, your surnames not Humphries is it? For winter salad leaves go to the real seed company`s website & look at the Japanese mustards, these are brill ;D I grew them in pots last year & they overwintered really well, cropping right through till Spring.

Not Humpries I'm afraid.... think of the confusion that would cause on here!

Heehee........one would be shouting "Im Free" the other shouting "Im Four"...................................sorry, Ill get me coat!

All those can be planted now AdrianH... and if you can find any seed Purple Cape is a great winter veg...  ;D
