I found it really awkward to weed last years squash! This year I'm, thinking about putting cardboard and old beach mats down as weed suppressant, has anyone else tried this?

I will be trying this too with my pumpkins, as chickweed got a hold because of the difficulty of weeding.

We grew them through holes in black plastic at the farm last year. You just have to watch none of the fruit sits in a puddle or it will rot. We just put lumps of wood under them to keep them off the ground.

They love the extra heat the black provides ;)
I was born with nothing and have most of it left.

I'm hoping to plant through plastic this year on our new plot on an uncleared area, so it's good to hear they grow well this way. So we can still use most of the plot but not worry too much about getting all of it cleared straight away.

I grew squash through huge smartboard box opened out a couple of years ago.  The slugs hid underneath it and carried out guerilla raids on the plants.  The ones that survived did great though and they were in a couch infested area that did not get a look in.

I'm growing my melons through cheap lidl weed suppressant fabric with holes cut in it and perhaps squash too. I'll be trying out a rather strange melon planting system I found in an old book too so I'll keep you posted when its up and running.

we do the same, the squash, courgettes and pumpkins grew well, apart from not much fruit  because of the weather  ;D
