Hi, I have got several books on growing veg etc and all of the mention early/late spring, summer etc.  What actually would anyone define as early spring.  I have almost got all my onion planted, and garlic I put in back end of last year is doing well. Is it too early to put in peas, beetroot, parsnips and some early carrots.  I am in North Yorks.

Cheers

I'm in North Yorks too. I always finf this confusing too, but I reckon early spring is March or possibly late Feb if it's mild. I would say it's too early to sow carrots & parsnips but others may disagree.

hiya, gilly, welcome to the site..
we've got early peas growing under cover in a gutter, early spring to me is when I see the plants and weeds growing  ;D
parsnips are in a raised bed covered with fleece,
early carrots are in a hot bed, again under fleece, more to stop any nasties
just sowed some beetroot in jiffy 7's inside on the windowsill  :)
we're near manchester  :)

March = Early Spring
April = Mid Spring
May = Late Spring
June = Early Summer
July = Mid Summer
August = Late Summer
September = Early Autumn
October = Mid Autumn
November = Late Autumn
December = Early Winter
January = Mid Winter
February = Late Winter
Then it all begins again :)

I have to admit that I've put my carrots in as I was worried I was leaving it too late. It's my first year growing vegetable and the packet said February. I left it until last week but I didn't know how much longer I could leave it.

I would agree with rclanger except that here in edinburgh winter sometimes extends into November and March.
