I'm the same as you Rob I chit them in the garage to get long spidery shoots forming instead of the short thick stubby ones. The yields are always excellent.

swift potatoes chitting  ;D

Busby

I chitted for many years but for the past few years I haven't. In fact I buy my seed potatoes (two kinds - early and late), put them into a strong paper bag and leave them at the bottom of the fridge until I am ready.

I've just a good a crop as I ever had without the work. Although 'without the work' isn't quite true as I always dig a good trench when planting and I use a lot of compost to give them a good start.

Indeed, Calendula - I wasn't recommending leaving them in the dark. Just saying that you don't have to have light to start them sprouting.
