Allotments 4 All

This time it's the aubergines and peppers  :'(. All plants looked fine a few days ago, but today all but 2 aubs are brown and  rotten and so are a few of the peppers. I've harvested all the remaining peppers (still green).

Same here, had to burn all my tomato plants about 6 weeks ago - lottie neighbours gave us some of their spares and now they've got it too

Yes I have blight in my tomatoes and a few of the potatoes.  Is this due to the weather conditions this summer being so wet???

Dandelion - surely that's mould rather than blight?

Laurdan - wish one could answer that.

But here's another one - touched upon earlier I think. We know that a cover will protect against Blight, but how dense must it be?

Solid, fleece, mesh, netting??

we've had some of our aubergines and peppers go the same way, grey mould, the plants are ok so I've just taken the rotten ones off, we've got a few nice sized ones now  :)

Back to potato blight, in particular.

We know that total cover prevents blight. Would mesh give any protection - or does it come through with the rain?

If rainwater can get through, it'll carry the microscopic spores with it.

Strage thing though......
Most people I have spoken to who have grown tomatoes in a greenhouse have had some blight, but not as bad as the plants outside.
We lost 99% of our outdoor toms, and we managed to dig up most of the spuds before they were too badly affected.
What I am getting at is that the greenhouse toms were watered from a rain butt- wouldn't this hold the spores too?
We have had no blight at all in the greenhouse, yet loads outdoors.
Same rain....one direct to the plant, one poured onto the roots.
Why would this be????

Do you put water from the butt all over the leaves? I wonder how long the spores actually survive in water?

To reach the back row ( I zigzag the planting in the greenhouse) ,the front plants get plenty of water on their lower leaves, so in effect - yes.
They still looked healthy this weekend with plenty of flowers and baby toms!! ( and no- it's not a heated greenhouse!!!)- won't last long....

I've had fleece on my last few aubergines and they got mould...

I have found this year from looking about on our plots  that greenhouses with their door facing north were not affected by blight .. Greenhouses with their door south or east had bad attacks..
This is  the first time in a lot of years we have ever had blight on our plots, I had never seen it before... I can't coment on west facing doors as out of 20 odd greenhouses on our plots none faced their doors to the west...
As anyone else noticed similar .May just be coincidental but would be handy to know if it wasn't...
So which way does your door face and how bad were you affected ?

South!!! :D

East (in Mid Wales) & no blight in greenhouse either!!!

West - no blight!
