one of our mates on the bowling green found a little one in the car park, he wrapped it in his coat and brought it up to us,
one of the lads says it's a bit underweight, as soon as I lifted an old piece of wood, it started hoovering up the worms and things
it's got things around it's neck, are they mites or something, not many, 5 or 6..do they make them ill ?
also, are worms and slugs enough or do I have to get some dog meat ?

calendula

I've got one on one of my plots but I'm leaving well alone - they do feel light compared to their size and they will be looking to sleep soon I imagine - try this site for really helpful care hints

they are well known to have fleas but this site might have some info regarding the 'bugs'

thank you, calendula, they're ticks, I've found another site as well, they say to cover them with olive or cooking oil, suffocates them, apparently, will see if it's around on thursday and try it, I won't bother with the dog food, I think there's enough 'natural' food, especially slugs, on our plots  ;D

Hi

we have 2 hybernating in our communal compost area at the moment.

What i would suggest is that you get a pallet, dig a nice big hole line with shreaded paper or straw and pop the pallet on top leaving a small opening that it can get in and out of and leave it to do its thing. You need to make sure that foxes cant follow the hedgehog in.

More info on proper houses can be found via http://www.britishhedgehogs.org.uk/FAQS/hedgehog_homes.htm

You just need to check in spring when it wakes up :)

then you will be slug free!!

thanks, cam..have passed this on to the hole digger  ;D

If you think the hedgehog is underweight, I would feed it with Cat food so that it can get up to a reasonable body weight before hybernation.  I am still feeding my hedgehog.   I know theres a lot of slugs about but it still scoffs the cat food everynight.

;) ;)

thanks, carol, will pick up a tin tomorrow  :)

poor little soul dies, we found him when we went on friday  :(
could it be he had eaten something from the bowling green, they have been treating the grass ?

Carol

Probably slug pellets, that will kill hedgehogs or maybe another member of the bowling club fed it Milk and bread which gives them sore tums with diarrhoea.  Shame.
