Hi

I think that Lewis Hamilton first year his doggid determination, guts and sportmanship in defet should make him BBC sports personality of the year.

In a way i am kind of glad he did not win as i think that the pressure he would be under next year would have been unbearable!! I am very glad that alonzo did not win as he has shown himself to be a 2 faced stab in the back and i have people like that!!

Hes certainly made motor racing much more intresting this year, and i am now trying to get tickets for the singapore race next year :)

If he HAD won the drivers championship - then yes... Getting BBC sports personality of the year for coming joint second is a little unfair on other sports men and women that have manged to win somthing this year, hmm although I cant think of much we actually won this year tho.. so perhaps joint second will have to do  ;D

yep, but the thing is hes young and to climb so high so fast is amazing.

Hes local to our part of the UK and they have been showing you interviews of him as a kid karting and the concentration and commitment is much more than his years.

Golf - You actualy won something but who cares it boaring (England's Steve Webster wins the Portugal Masters)

....... so lets face it there is very little choice this year!

You're probably right Cam - but I would like to see either Jason Robinson or Stuart Broad  :)

Jason Robinson is already an MBE, Stuart Broad plays cricket and thats just not cut the mustard this year.

John Higgins won the Snooker Championship this year, but does he not count??

Formula 1 isn't on the Beeb...

Martin 'Wolfie' Adams  won the world darts championship this year - some how i doubt hell win the BBC sports personality of the year, even though darts is the sport of kings!

According to the reports this morning the fuel scandel was a dicrepancy about the temperature of the fuel going into the cars. The rules state that the fuel in the car must not be more than 10oC below ambient temperatures and the BMW and Williams fuel was found to be 12-14oC below ambient. Unfortunatly since they don't state which is the 'official' temperature reading, the differences between the F1 management readings and the FIA meterologist have meant that its unclear whether they were actually breaching the rules. Also, there is no direct measurement of the temperature of the fuel in the car so its a v difficult rule to enforce. Hence the stewards decided on no penalty and I think that McLarens appeal will fail.

Why do we always want to reward the runners up?

As for Lewis Hamiton making f1 more interesting I hardly think thats any kind of achievement. My dog walking past the tv is more interesting than the tripe that is f1. The fat cats who run f1, mainly Bernie "pay me more or i will drop silverstone" Eccelstone have ruined the once great sport. Oh for the glory days of Mansell Prost and the greatest driver the world has ever seen Ayrton Senna.

Sport's Personality of The Year to me means a sporting person, with a personality to encourage others and promote their sport - Not sure on this basis who I would chose, and although I think that Lewis has been a fantastic driver, I personally haven't seen him promote his sport, or encourage people to join in or watch his sport!

I am by no means an F1 fan and I have only watched a couple of races this year and I think your point is very valid.  One thing I will say is that in these days where everybody progresses round the track in procession and the faster cars overtake only when it is safe and inevitable, Hamilton's driving is totally different.  He drives like those great drivers you mentioned.  He throws the car around and he overtakes when nobody else on the track would even contemplate it.  He also defends his position like a demon.  He has taken the sport back 20+ years whilst taking it forward.  He is the saviour for a sport which was in danger of disappearing where the sun doesn't shine.  He is the new Senna.

Lewis will get it - after all they gave 2nd to Button last year for winning 1 race.

He may of lost the championship but won many races and how many other sports personalties put their life on the line when taking part in their sport.

however look at the bookies odds for him and you'll know its a foregone conclusion. Unless there's another horse riding event around Xmas that only heirs to the throne are allowed (or can afford) to compete in   


.... and it depends how much they are charging for the phone in and who's organising the admin!

You may be interested to  hear that Lewis Hamilton has an allotment connection. His great-uncle John is a long-standing pillar of the Acton Gardening Association in west London, and has the plot next to mine.
