Hi peeps, hope someone can tell me what went wrong with our autumn planted garlic - had to get rid of it all today as it hadn't grown at all, despite putting on loads of lovely green leaves & conning me into thinking it was alright!!!  :-X  Anyhow, it ended up like a giant spring onion  :o - what did we do wrong?  :-[

Thanks in advance x

what type of garlic did you grow?

Its possible that you might have been able to use that as solo garlic now but i did not think it was ready till july...

manicscousers

ours are like giant green spring onions but they're not ready 'til june at the earliest   :)

KEEP all the lovely green stuff as green garlic. Even freeze it.

But, going back a bit, that's how ours is now. It takes until July/August before you see a 'return'.

Last year I made the mistake of pulling up all my garlic far too early. I won't be making that mistake again.
Isn't it amazing how much you can learn from this forum and a little hard work on the plot.

Green garlic can be used like spring onions, to give a mild garlic taste. They bulb up quite late, like overwintering onions.

Wow, really glad I read this thread, I checked my autumn planted garlic and wondered if I had planted onions instead... will leave them alone and hopefully get huuugge bulbs in July!!!

Kitten - ended up like spring onions?? At this time of year, most garlics have barely started. It puts on a spurt just when you're getting worried!

Robert_Brenchley

My garlic looke like spring onions as well, but it always does at the end of April! It'll be a different story in July.
