Ups - nurturing an artichoke seedling, planting out, grows to six feet tall in first year and told not to harvest till next year.  Downs - next year arrives and plant get hit by frost and dies - hopes dashed  :(
Remember to back up! Two in reserve  ;)

Got first allotment 24//4/06 - so much to do!

I've got trays of seeds all over the place. For some reason, the ones in the kitchen aren't doing well at all. I moved the corn out when it started to keel over (it's now flourishing upstairs), but because of space I had to move squashes downstairs, and they're now keeling over. With this warm weather, they're going to the mini-greenhouses this weekend. Hopefully that'll solve it. Last year, corn flourished in the kitchen.

i think perhaps growing seeds ought to have a government warning like everything else warning can become addictive

It is always a thrill! I always feel amazed that those tiny little dots can turn into something so brilliant! Squash are fantastic as they are so strong and make little volcanoes as they are moving the soil out of the way.  :D busy_lizzie

it is addictive !   its my favourite time of year - currently I've got some wild flowers popping through and it's a complete mystery as to what they are going to become.  It's also such a relief when seedlings finally appear, especially if they've been MIA for a while.

No it does not wear off, after 7 years I come down in the morning
checking all trays etc a bit like walking around ones estates !

hahaha, MR that's exactly right!

It is so exciting, watching the little darlings push up towards the light.

But then, when every seed germinates, and you realise don't actually have room for 49 tomato plants, the slaughter begins. Thinning out. It's like Sophie's Choice.
You been goofin' with the bees?

ninnyscrops

How many of you feel sorry for the little darlings and give them a helping hand when they can't shed the seed pods?  ;D  Then pull off a leaf!   ::)

Been there, done that - just today with a cucumber seedling. The variety hasn't germinated well and I had to pull the seed leaves off with the seed pod on the only one to germinate, didn't I? And at £3.45 for 5 seeds - that's not funny  :'(.

I get excited when my cress germinates in the kitchen on a paper towel!  And as they break the soil, I welcome everyone - gotta treat them well, they will be our dinner in a couple of months time!

And yes ninny....my courgettes have been sticking this time.

How many of you get fed up waiting and poke around to see with the bigger seeds?  I do I do.

And I have dropped the odd seed when sowing and it falls to the greenhouse floor, then germinates, and I spend the rest of the summer treading over a lone cabbage or beetroot that is growing there!  Crazy.

Jeannine

Over sowing is the funniest bit for me. This year I sowed some 1988 squash seeds,Iwas going to chuck them out but thought I will have a go,I thought I may be lucky and get 1 that I can grow for seed so I sowed all I had, about 35 seeds, I got over 20 plants!!! This shook me rigid,19 years old and I got so many.Aint nature wonderful XX Jeannine

Just for a moment  I thought you had sowed a total of 1988 squash seeds Jeannine...

:D First thing I do is go into the greenhouses and say "Good morning boys and girls" and then I do a tour of the 'estate'.

Ahmed leaves his radio on for his seedlings!

I am so resisting doing that to my okra seedlings even as I type - they're there on the window sill looking all cramped and uncomfortable, and if I could just ping that seed pod off ...... :)
