Hi, I am beginning to think I should start a seed stashers anonymous group to help people like me and others who have seed collecting addiction.

I don't think I dare publicly admit truthfully how many different varieties of tomato seeds I have (my particular tipple you might say)

I think this is some sort of a disease I suffer from.I have been pondering the question of late, trying to figure it out.

What makes a fairly  sane ,mature person  collect and hoard  such a huge amount of seeds. I could never use all them in three lifetimes.

Is it something in the air that goads me  into increasing my stash. It seems to get worse in the Spring and settles down as Winter approaches.

Should I think about  putting a ban on seed catalogues, or start a campaign to have them classified as restricted to non gardeners only. They pop through the letter box like drug dealers flounting their wares.I don't stand a chance.

Then there is the net, maybe I can contact my server and put restrictions on what I can click on to  like Mums do with their children to avoid porn and such.

Even  shopping is dangerous. I go to by bread at Lidl and there they are, racks and racks of seed packets, just waiting for me to stop and look, and if you do, you're done for.

Try buying dog food at the pet mart, guarantee I will come out with carrot seeds too.

Packet of screws from B&Q, parsnips

I need new knickers, but am scared to go to Marks amd Spencers in case they to have started a gardening section and I come home with kohl rabi.

It's no good you saying don't look, cos it's impossible to walk past, and once you stop, that's it .

I am now starting to think I should hide them from the family ,like gin bottles,so I don't have to admit what the real situation is.

So is it just me, please tell me I am not alone...................or is there enough of us to start a group .

Yep, I think I could be a member of seed stashers anonymous!  My OH just groans when I squeal with excitement at yet another order from a catalogue or an A4A seeds swap!  I've only been growing less than a year and I have a (big) shoe box full of seeds (and actually, come to think of it, that's overflowing!).  To think I started off with a packet of Tomato Alicante and Chilli Cayenne!!!!

PS.  Your post has given me the giggles!
;D
Thank you to all who donated to the Moonlight Half Marathon Walk in aid of St Catherine's Hospice - my mum and I raised just over £300!!!    ............     Thanks!  :-)

 :-[ also guilty.
got ever so slightly carried away at Chelsea in 2003 when T&M sold off their seeds at 25p a packet.
the worst  thing is that I still have most of them, unopened :(
just bought some more from a bargain shop in Norwich: 69p each or 5 for £1, so bought £2's worth :-[

it's a compulsion!

A moving picture of where I'm headed, Jeannine.  Popped into the garden center on Sunday; £50 later and I've got a fist full of seed packets, potatoes, 200l of compost and some new seed trays.   :-[ ;D
My allotment blog Plot326.  In it's infancy at the mo but in time it'll grow.

Barnowl

It's being on broadband at work that does for me - all those lovely online seed retailers....

angle shades

 :)

bad news Jeannine our local M&S are selling herb/veg seeds in trendy tins ::)

so don't buy any knickers just yet ;)

I also have more tomato varieties than a sane person should have......and I'm running out of places to store all my other seeds

theres more than enough of us to start that group (my new passion is fruit trees, see one buy one think about where to plant it later ::))

see you in therapy /shades x
grow your own way

I'm fairly certain that Biscombe wins on the Tom list but I spent £20 at 25p a packet at Wyvale before Christmas and have about four carrierbags on the wall behind me!
;D

cambourne7

erm...

let me see at last count individual packets - veg seeds 159, flowers 77.

excluding blubs and onion sets which i think is another 350!

call the men in white coats!

Jeannine

I feel better already, but  Saddad  you were bad to bring up fruit trees,I have a very small back garden with just borders round a paved area,I have huge pots with family apples, family pears, a plum,a peach,a cherry and an apricot, plus  10 large pots with blueberries in and a lone fig. plus I have pear I bought I bought by accident, beautiful cordon job. My poor Pekes don't know where to go potty and the cat thinks the pots are litter trays.

Biscombe I dare you to tell how many tomato varieties, maybe we should do some swapping!! I tell  if you will, but it is insane.

If we start a group perhaps  we should  meet in Kew Gardens ,I don't think they sell anything there.( I'll bring my scissors)

I must admit to being an addict too. I find it so amazing that all that potential veg is hidden in a little, dry, maggoty looking blob!

cj :)

Robert_Brenchley

39 tomato varieties, just for a start. I'm not going to have space for all of them.

Chris Graham

Since i have only really just started, i dont have that many.

I have bought around 6 more packs from Alan Roman, so i would say 25 packs in total.

I too am a seed collector!  Wherever I go I have to buy seeds, seeds and more seeds - the same goes for garlic and onion sets.... I am sooooooooo gonna have too many onions this year (didnt grow any last year).  In fact I should start buying storing materials.

My seeds now take up 2 huge shoe boxes and a large xmas chocolate tin.
