Our Cavolo Nero has survived the winter (so far) and is now sprouting in a fashion reminiscent of white PSB. Has anyone tried eating it in this form?

Yes mine is doing the same, i think it is just naturally going to seed, especially given the mild temperatures I would expect this to happen now anyway.  Cutting the heads off wont make a great deal of difference, they will reappear.  I would salvage what you can now and the crop is finished.

Mine is sprouting - tis meant to tast good - what I want to know is how big does the sprouting bit get as I want to pick it as big as possible but not let it go too far.

Cavolo Nero is a black kale from Italy.

I think someone is sending you some seeds but called it Tuscan Black Kale, pretty sure that's the same stuff. If not I've also a few spare seeds of Cavolo Nero.

He's a pic from the net - ours doesn't look as look smart. Your crop the leaves from th ebottom upwards and it keeps getting taller and producing more from the top.

The bit that is now sprouting is considered a delicacy at the end of the plant's life. Let it get to the "pip" stage but don't let it flower. As with PSB, take the tops first, and with luck you may also get some sprouting further down.

Mine does the same and we have eaten half - fab - and have a few left.  Don't let the buds show any colour, cut the stem away clean and it will continue to branch.  I normally oik the last of mine out just as I am planting my new ones.

Thank you I didn't realise it is Kale, another day I learned some new things Mmmmmmm  Life is good   XX  Jeannine
