...at some point last year we had a thread where we talked about our relatives and their experiences in the war? Well atlast I have a scanner that works(hurrah!) so I would like to show you a photograph of my Great Uncle Bill and his gang.  Think Bill is the one in the hat though my mother couldn't be absolutely sure!

"Our little desert "gang" minus the photographer. Taken while en route on entry to Libya.  NOTE "Iti" rifle picked up on side Regegh (???) battlefield. And Wally with his "Gerry" overcoat; having lost his own."

The last pic is of my Grandad. He's on the left. Smashing bloke he was. Sometimes I wished people still smoked pipes because I miss the smell of St Brunos. I hate smoking an all! That picture was sent to my Uncle Paul in 1951. Isn't it great when people write on the back of the photos!

Hi Heldi, i wasn't around on the site when the discussion took place last year, but wanted to say your grandad looks like a real distinguished gentleman! I bet you're v proud of him! Great pics, thanks for posting them! x
Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened

Great pics Heldi. We have photos of my Pa-in-Law who was a Chindit in Burma, with his gang, names on the back, and telegrams to my Ma-in-Law,his embarkation card, his Soldiers Service Pay Book other war related  bits and bobs and a very battered photo of Ma-in-Law which he carried with him throughout his service. I would like to make a collage of them but Bearded Wonder likes to leave them in their special tin -  so that's where they stay.
Smile, it confuses people.

Ta! I love looking at old photos and often wonder about the people in them. I've shown that top pic to many friends and they are always really interested in it, especially with the writing on the back.   Someone I know was even particularly taken with seeing the teapots/kettles two of the men are holding!

I'm scanning these to put into frames and then the original ones can go back into a box.

I'm beginning to think I've posted these before..if I have sorry..I just came across them again recently. They fell out of a book.

Roughly the same period 1938... my mum is 5th from the left in the first proper row this pic was in the local rag the other week. I'd never seen a picture of my mum so young before!

;D

What brilliant photos - such a lot of history there!  I too love old photos, even when I see old albums in Flea Markets I want to buy them. That is the problem with digital, though it is brilliant, you don't have the same thrill as you did looking at the shiney paper photos. busy_lizzie
