All of our sweetcorn has not ripened yet and are still clear instead of yellow, with frosts soon on there way and no warm weather in sight, what is the best method to make them ripen?

Are you sure they aren't a white variety? Are the kernels watery or creamy? Have you tried one? Have the tassles gone brown yet?

ruffmeister

they came from yellow seed, the corns half way down the cob are yellow. they kernals are creamy, and the tassels have been brown for weeks now

any ideas?

bear in mind that they never ripen to the end. Are you checking the whole cob or just the last inch?

ruffmeister

both the top is still clear and the middle is creamy

think Tims advice is meant for you ruffmeister, we mourned the eating of our last cob some time ago (well apart from the ones in the freezer)

Some of mine stayed white even though they were mean't to be yellow and tassels were brown never ripened and some haven't still.

Mrs Ava

Mine are still coming, although a lot slower now.  I start to check regularly and this lot are dayglo yellow.  I wonder if there is something in the soil, or the air temps or something which varies the colours of the cobs.  I pick them because if they go startchy, they are as tough and chewy as old booties, altho the hamsters don't complain!

tim

Oh, God - you have hamsters too??

Mrs Ava

Unfortunately Tim, we do.  :-\

i take it all back went to the lottie last night and low and behold they are ALL yellow. Corn all round

I was about to ask the same question! The tassles on mine are brownish and billowy: I opened a cob yesterday and the kernals looked distinctly embryonic! We're having a marvellous patch of allotment weather: sunshine then furious showers on a 12 hour rota. Should I get the cobs in or trust there'll be no frost soon?

Fingers and toes... Buxton is notorius(?) for its poor weather down south here in Derby!

Decision made for me! I tried one of the cobs: it tasted like a big baby sweetcorn. Unfortunately I ate it and am now waiting for the stomach ache to begin...
So, I shall just leave them. If they ripen, they ripen. It was a valiant effort.
