But I can never figure why a winter cabbage should always mature in the early Autumn. Planted mid-June. Should I have left it till later??

Even January King are hearting up!!

Hi Tim,
Looks pretty good, even if it is too early, I sowed my tundra in early August & planted them out early September, under netting of course. They are coming on well & if this very mild September is a taste of the future I think we will all need to sow winter veg that much later.

Thanks, Adrian. Never thought of sowing so late - always assumed that varieties did their own 'staggering' & nearly always put them out in June.
Like this suggests -

"Winter Cabbage F1 Tundra
Tundra is a winter cabbage with a tremendous reputation for uniformity, reliability and very long field standing ability. Its winter hardiness allows Tundra to be harvested to the end of the cabbage season from late sowings (Does this mean later than suggested below?) while continuity can be achieved by sowing early as well. (Earlier than suggested?)
Sow:- April-May Plant out May-June Harvest October onwards."

First year of allotment and veggies and perhaps an incurable optimist I planted my Winter King seeds two weeks ago (actually forgot to do it earlier).

It's so warm in London I've a theory we have 1-2 months latitude on planting times - nothing ventured.....

Mrs Ava

Fab cab Tim!  Mine are still a way off yet - 'Greyhound' - but they should be just ready when winter comes!  ;D

tim

That's what I couldn't understand with your Veg show Greyhound, Emma  - it's an early Spring variety??

As long as it grows who really cares? I put out some spring cabbage in August and they are now football sized so I have some more 4 leaf jobs ready to go out this week!

My concern was that Greyhound wouldn't over-winter. But maybe that was not your intent.

Not that mine will - they never get that far!!

Multiveg

My cabbage this year succumbed to caterpillars. In a rage from discovering blackfly and broadies, I pulled up one cabbage to find it had clubbie. The cabbage was the size of a sprout -it should have been bigger being a summer variety.

Your cabbage still looks tasty, Tim.

I grew a winter cauli - according to the packet, to be harvested April - I harvested it in October!
