Allotments 4 All

I rushed home from holiday to harvest the toms that I knew would have ripened over the last two weeks ........ only to find that nearly all had split open.  Like their skins were too small for them.
My husband, who says he knows nothing about veg, so don't ask him, says that it is down to 'erratic watering'.  Is he right or is there some other reason.

It is.  Exactly that.   :-\  It seems to be somthing most peeps are suffering with this year.

It's because it's suddenly turned so wet; the fruit start growing suddenly, and the skin splits open.

I have 6 tomato plants on the balcony. Of the two I grew upside down, the one that gets a bit less sun has a split tomato or two every week. Odd that it is only one of my six plants.

But it probably is the watering. It seems impossible to keep them watered if they're in containers. 

I'm afraid it's the result of the weather.  The very dry weather earlier on caused some problems with rot, and the wet August caused splitting.  Provided the fruits haven't gone mouldy, they can still be used, especially for passata.

Interestingly, our Italian varieties have proved much more resistant to splitting than the English ones.  Most susceptible seem to have been Ailsa Craig and Tigerella.

Wish it were as simple as that.

Our watering regime (indoors) never varies over the years - at least once a day & up to 3 times in the 'summer'. We always get some splitting - usually half way through the season - but this year, one variety, Harbinger, has gone mad. Nearly every fruit has split.

Yep my Harbinger are the worst culprits as well...
