taking ages to redden!

Any way to speed up ripening?! Partly venting, partly serious  ;).

Despite the sunny weather we have had recently, some of ours are being a bit shy about ripening.

The advice at the end of the season, to ripen green tomatoes that you have picked, is to put them in a container with a ripe banana.

I suppose it wouldn't hurt putting some ripe bananas in amongst them?

Any ripening fruit give off ethylene (?) gas which is why when one starts they all do. Bananas are just very good at it! Have they had long enough if you put them in late as we did in that poor month they aren't ready.

hi all.

havent been on forum for ages..

i too have green tom's - would you suggest putting some banana peels on top of the soil????

many thanks

Oddly enough I put some on my Romas yesterday.  And today one is at last showing signs of a blush.

Probably just a coincidence ...

It's called 'nothing ventured, nothing gained'.  Try it and see.  It may well be coincidence, but if you don't try it you won't know!!!

I seem to remember someone mentioning way back when, that toms won't redden if the temperature is to high.  Mine have just started to ripen, well the cherries have.  I am not worried, still time.

Going to be expensive toms using bananas? Try that old remedy - patience??

Or, if you must use bananas, pick the most ripe toms & put them in a box with the fruit?

Robert_Brenchley

My outdoor toms are starting to yield now, though some varieties are well ahead of others. What variety are they, and are they indoor or outdoor? It probably is just a matter of time.

Barnowl

All outdoor toms facing the same way - only one plant of each so possibly not typical - in  order of ripening (no banana skins involoved):

I just meant the skins, had plenty to hand after making a rather rude dessert with the bananas ...   :-X

I'm only waiting for the Romas now, but I'm in no hurry.  They're destined for sauce, and the others are all ripening nicely.

keef

Dare you to post a pick of the dessert in question!

You ate the best one    ;)

I'll make some more, by which time i might have mastered the new camera instructions.   ;D

Later: done it.  (There were 3 left in the freezer.)  Thought they'd better go in the Watershed.  :o
