Allotments 4 All

Hi all,
I dug up all my sprout plants today (2/30' rows) as the whole harvest was a mere handful, consumed on Christmas day. The variety, grown for the first time is 'Evesham'. I have grown 'Peer Gynt' for many years with great success but the strain has finished.
The plants were staked/earthed up etc. but the sprouts were either 'blown' or too small to bother.
Shall I try again or is there a match for 'Peer Gynt' out there?

I too like Peer Gynt, and have some seed to last a few more years, but I tried Trafalgar this year and it has been very good. I also hear good reports about Brilliant.

Pity you pulled them up! If you had left them in the ground, in March and April you would be able to harvest lovely green shoots and the tops of the plants for tasty greens, when greens are hard to come by.
My Brussels are too small to harvest at the moment, but I shall just wait and see if they start to grow soon!

do you cut them down,and new leaves grow, or do you leave it?

you leave them and the tops will sprout more v tasty.I think the very dry growing period this and last year is mainly to blame as they are trying to seed through lack of moisture.

I grew the following this season, Cumulus, harvest Oct-Dec, Peer gynt replacement and Wellington, harvest Dec-Mar.
Excellent crops off both types and I also liked the taste.  (available from dobies).

I never thought I could replace dear old Peer Gynt, but I found Brilliant was just that - absolutely brilliant. I am slightly less thrilled with my late sprout Trafalgar, so I am trying Wellington this year.

Yup, I will second Brilliant.   Huge crop, and still going strong!  Going to be eating sprouts until Easter I reakon!
