I have just received these Peter "thingy" Peppers mentioned in another post from the USA. I have never grown peppers before and don't have a greenhouse or conservatory. Do I hear cries of sympathy? or just smug sniggers ?   ;D Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. TIA   {:¬)#

Presumably you have a windowsill AikenDrum ... choose one on the sunny side of the house ...put seeds in a pot with some compost, add water, watch the gasps of amazement as the phallic fruits appear ...  ;D.
Perhaps not quite that easy, but that is the gist ...

AikenDrum

ermmm, when ?  I don't use heating of any kind in my abode. I'm convinced it makes us more prone to annoying ailments and lessens our bodies natural immune system. Weird or what ?    ;D

Treat them the same as you would your tomato plants, although I believe they like a longer growing season.

AikenDrum

phankx MikeB, it says 90 to maturation so that seems about right. Beytter get ready for a visit from the vice squad, lol

Aiken you can always cover the pot with a plastic bag till the rude seedlings appear, acts like a propagator and gives them a bit of a head start.......opps that came out all wrong, but you know what I mean! :-[

OOOh clever idea with the plastic bag DP ... a clear one would help AikenDrum as it would let more light in ...

Humble, Drummerboy? Did I miss something?

Agree with you on the heating thingy aiken - but have to admit to having central heating on just recently. In air conditioned and central heating buildings those little nasty bugs do spread :(
If you don't make mistakes, you'll never make anything!

Belinda - yes, saw it, thanks - most unlike me, I was just having a slight snidery with AD.

cleo

Aha-I now `get the picture` :). It probably needs covering with something, but how big does it grow??.

You could try the old `water hoop and polythene `cloche trick to keep it to keep it `perky` ;D

AikenDrum

I picked up on it tim    :D and it grows to about 18" to 24"

hi aiken drum!
i'm certainly NOT an expert, never having grown peppers successfully but thought i'd pass a tip from "the real seed catalogue".
the blurb on my seed packet suggests starting a few pepper plants off on the window sill as early as january to get a really long season. they also mention that some initial heat will make germination more likely.
good luck,
Tara xx

AikenDrum

Thanks for that Tara, duly filed away.    {:¬)#

Trouble is - unless you're growing pot plants, indoors - where do you put them that is frost free? The very earliest that I've put plants into a cold 'house is mid-April - with considerable risk.

And, as well as heat for germination - like 18-25C - everything needs LIGHT. And in Feb-Mar you just don't have it. Unless you buy it in like we do.

In the end, everything comes to him who waits!
