Hi tim
HP seem to change there cartridges as they do there printers .
When i chose my last printer i looked at the price of the cartridges first then looked at the printer with two boys printing out pictures of the net one needs to keep the price of ink as low as poss. :D

It's also worth remembering catalogue stockists such as CPC, Maplin, etc.  Big discount on what you would pay in stores.

We use a supplier quite local to us (quite luckily!) called Mouse2House, they sell ink cartridges for almost half the price one would pay in the shop.  I believe they also deliver nationwide, so worth a look.

Ink cartridges are so expensive, I do not buy them anymore, I let them refill!!
It takes only ten minutes and the cost is only 10% of a new one :D

Petals - you had me worried for a moment. Then I checked out our Viking supplier & their price is even better.
But, must say, if you're not fached about the guarantee, then refill.

I use www.ukdvdr.co.uk for the cartridges for my Cannon,
black & single colour cartridges are 69p each, including vat.

Apart from DIY kits, or driving 20 miles to the nearest conurbation, where do you get refills.

Compatible cheapos don't yet seem to be available yet for our machine.

And do subs actually affect the guarantee?

Doris_Pinks

Tim I get mine from here, don't know how they compare pricewise with the others out there, but they have been good so far, next day delivery and aftercare good.

As to the affecting of the guarantee, I have no idea, but wonder how would they know? And, the price of their own brand cartridges is so outrageous we could probably buy a new printer with what we have saved! ;D
We don't inherit the earth, we only borrow it from our children.

I've tried refills and cheapo compatibles in my HP printer, neither worked very well.
Refilling didn't work at all, and compatibles clogged up very quickly.

The problem with HP's is that the print head is built into the cartridges, and when you buy a compatible cartridge you are buying a refilled cartridge.
It works well in respect of giving the printer itself a long life because every time you change the cartridge you also change the print head.
BUT it costs.

And every time HP bring out a new printer range they change the design. Until there is a sufficient supply of empty cartridges there will be no 'compatibles' on the market.

If cheap running costs is what you're after, then you are generally better off with Epson or Canon printers. But when their print heads wear out, the printer will need replacement.

As for guarantees, keep hold of the original empty cartridges. If it breaks while using replacements, pop the originals back in ;). They'll be none the wiser...

I hoe, I hoe, then off to work I go.

Tim,
I have a `HP 895 Printer `and use Tesco equivalent Cartridges -- they are just as good and cheaper by far. Only available at `Tesco Extra` outlets -- ie Large  Tesco Stores.

Hi Tim,

I work in IT and have never had a good word to say about re-fills or compat. cartridges except for the cost being low.  The quality just isn't the same.  We tried one company recently who claimed to use HP cartridges, especially cleaned, filled with the same ink as HP use and only re-cycled once.  The black were OK (ish) but the colour was terrible.

There are a few cheap suppliers on ebay or you could try novatech.co.uk - no doubt everyone else has their own recommended suppliers.....

All seems to stem from the fact that HP printers are usually built like tanks and offer good value on the strength of that.  They just claw back that cost on the cartridges.

Incidently, what are the cartridge numbers of the spares you have?  Someone may offer a few quid for them  ;)
