Do they mean us?

Hi, I have just been browsing on the beeb site - I do occasionally and have just come across this.  It is part of a conversation on the TV gardening section.  I know this has come up before, but when they mention annexe, are they talking about a4a?  I am afraid I felt my hackles rise at this.  There has been some unpleasant happenings on our board recently and I don't want to cause any more antagonism but surely it is not right to use our board as a convenience and to call it an annexe.  What do other members think? Have I completely misunderstood or do they mean us?

"OH has laid a really pretty brick path underneath which extends the S shape as you go though the arch which is at 45 deg to the length of the plot ( which is long and narrow - does that make sense) maybe I ought to try posting some photos on the annexe."  Quote from beeb site.

I think they mean us.  I think it is a bit cheeky too.

Don't be offended.  Lots of us post both here and there, sometimes using the same user name, sometimes not.  To avoid bovver with the beeb, we refer to A4A as the annex.  If anyone asks for an explication we point them over here and always tell them there's a friendly and knowledgeable community here.

Some people start on the Beeb as it's easy to find but move here shortly afterwards as there is more scope for a variety of topics and, of course, the photo facility.
I expect many more will migrate here permanently if the Beeb gardening boards go the way of their science and wildlife boards.

I don't care - this is the primary site for me and all the active members here who have made it that way.

Those who regard it as just an annexe are denying themselves some quality of life. That is their problem, not mine.

I love being here and intend to remain as long as the site exists,

If this is the annexe, I much prefer it to the main house! I started on the beeb but came here because a) I'm in the process of getting an allotment and this is obviously the best place to ask advice and b) people here never seem to suffer from the sense of humour failure that the beeb site seems prone to.

Oh, and c) the jokes in the Watershed are mostly very funny...

Cheers,
Rob ;)

Yes BL, they do mean us.....and it got under my skin somewhat in the summer when I read about us on the beeb.  At the time I felt like beeb posters were taking the p*ss out of this site, and the members, so my postings have reduced and I don't read as many posts as I used to.  I wouldn't go to the beeb, I would rather go without.  Here we can chat, laugh, discuss, post photos, talk about 'other' topics. They can keep their site.

Hi, Obbelix, I am sure you don't mean to offend, but to call  A4A an annexe seems rather derogatory to me.  A4A is far from being an annexe of the beeb board and calling it so is not a very diplomatic way to describe another board, with a large and loyal membership.  We are a friendly board and I know you are a welcome contributor but  I hope you can see that referring to A4A like that could sound as though it is just being used as a convenience for photo posting.  In any case I am sure posting the words A4A would get past the censors without having to be inflammatory by using the word "annexe".  :) busy_lizzie

My mum had a beautiful vegetable garden with a gate thru to a farmer's field which had been grazed by cows for generations. They asked the farmer if they could take over part of the field next to the veg garden as an 'annexe'. When my mum took it over, she found that the veg in the annexe were always more beautiful, productive and delicious than those in the veg garden. QED! ;D

I didn't coin the term annexe but please remember it is just a word, not an attitude of mind.  The people over there are just the same as those here -  keen gardeners sharing or beginners seeking knowledge just like on here and there is also a fair share of off topic fun and games and the possibility of commenting directly on the beeb's gardening programmes - not that they seem to take any notice!.

If you pop over there you will see many long standing and regular contribitors to these boards who also like to post on the beeb.  The sense of community is just as strong.

I don't understand the problem.  Gardeners united - for me anyway.

Its their loss. I don't go to the bbc site because I don't have time to waste on that sort of cr@p behavior. Life is too short!
Make the most of today, because you'll never have it back again.

Yellow Petals

Come now peeps, let's not start AGAIN with a course down this kind of path.

Seems peeps can't wait to get their teeth in and ackles up at the slightest disagreement to their own judgement.

Be happy with what you do, who you are, what you post, where you post it and all you have to say and all you have to share - then what other people say about you shouldn't mean a darn thing!  And remember, those who criticise or ridicule are those who are one step behind you - that's why they criticise and ridicule you in the first place  ;D

No, I haven't been on Ozzy's waccy baccy, I just wonder why the 'superior' peeps of A4A cannot rise above it  ;D ;D

If you ask me, I doubt that any of you are working hard enough on your gardens, allotments or in the kitchen .. .. ..

..... I'll just get me coat (and a good pair of running shoes)

I think better all round if we take the attitude that we do not have time to get into petty spats between boards.  I too am a graduate of the BBC and discovered A4A through a coded reference on there - it was not the annexe back in January.  I do spend a lot more time here than the BBC and only pop over when A4A is very quiet (rare these days).  My only problem with the BBC is the over the top censorship - they refused a post of mine because I used the word pee instead of wee, urine etc in relation to compost heaps.  I can see why the BBC would not want adverts and links to cemmercial sites but there do get very anal about lonks and trademarks etc.  And that is the site not the users.

PS I find the little spat they had about nappies very amuzing.
