Can anybody tell me what this is? It's growing on the stem of a wild rose. :-\





And no, it's not a furball the cat coughed up as somebody suggested! ::)

 Hi Sketty,    The old country name is Robin's pin cushion. In May
the female of the wasp Diplolepis rosae lays its eggs in unopened leaf buds, your photo is the result. The larvae stay inside the gall through the winter and hatch out next May. LesH

That takes me back to my childhood when I used to see quite alot of them along the country lanes on the wild roses.  Haven't seen one for years - thanks for that :)
